"Inside Rainbow" as the title suggests, represents an independent criticial review of the bands career from 1975 to 1975. A period that is widely recongnised by fans and critics alike as the "golden age" of Ritchie Blackmore's genius to create a hard rock ensemble that would give a genuine expression to his legendary, diverse and often enigmatic musical talents. The DVD records the thoughts and opinions of a wide range of rock'n'Roll personnel from journalists to producers with the added input of the likes of Neil Murray and Doogie White, who incidentally is the only ex-member of Rainbow to appear in person. The flavour of the reviews are obviously congratulatory, from people who hold the band in high regard. The various reviews are interwoven with live footage from the Blackmore/Dio/Powell which provides the highlight of the 55 minute production. The only disappointment I had was that the various visual soundbites only lasted a few minutes each, thus leaving the discerning viewer with an appetite for more, which sadly the DVD failed to deliver. Full length coverage of at least one or two of the songs would have been great! During the review each of the 4 albums that cover this period were reviewed with the obvious lion's share of applause going to RISING, the definitive Rainbow masterpiece. Personally I enjoyed the documentary, and was thrilled to view for the first time on DVD live footage, including the legendary "technicolour Rainbow" that covered the stage. For Rainbow fans everywhere this DVD is a "must have" addition to their rock library. It will certainly bring back memories of how good this band were, and maybe reawaken some old passions. Classic Rock are to be saluted for their range of similar reviews covering other rock greats.
