"A forthright portrayal of growing up gay."

Book Description
Jason Carrillo has always only had eyes for a basketball scholarship for college. Now he only has eyes for Kyle. Kyle Meeks is in the relationship he's always wanted. Is it something too good to give up to go to college? Nelson Glassman may be HIV positive. Jeremy, the boy he loves, is HIV positive. Is the only way they can be together if they both test positive? New and exciting teen fiction for gay young adults, Rainbow High is a great novel. "Expertly mixes coming-out issues with the complications of first love." - Publishers Weekly

5.0 out of 5 stars An easy, enjoyable read with adorable characters, 12 Feb 2004
This review is from: Rainbow High (Hardcover)
(I don't normally do reviews as I've no skill for it, but I love this series from Alex Sanchez so much that I had to write something).

Rainbow High picks up where the previous book Rainbow Boys left off, and, for my money, is even better. I haven't laughed so much while reading another novel. Nor has another work of fiction encouraged me to grasp the very real implications and possible results of being completely true to oneself and honest with others.

Nelson Glassman has to be my favourite teen character I've ever come across in literature or TV, for his wit, bloody-mindedness, honesty, and outrageousness - not to mention his endearing naivity at times. (His worrying if there was a rule that the person who pays for the coffee gets to do the dumping, still cracks me up.)

All three of the main characters in the book are so real, multi-faceted and down-right likeable, yet they're completely different from one another.
A great book that I will no doubt read again and again ... I doubt anyone could dislike this book (nor the previous one).

Hopefully Sanchez will bless us with a third in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars A true snapshot of gay teen life, 14 Nov 2005
By Ian Fox-williams (West Midlands, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The benefit that gay teens can derive from having a network of support around them as well as from each other is just one aspect that this book successfully illustrates. We are introduced to three central characters, although one tries to avoid the obvious 'pigeon-holed' types of gay character, who are Jason - the high school jock who is in the closet, Kyle the placid and happily gay nerd and then Nelson the out and proud queen.
In this chapter of the series, the relationship between Jason and Kyle is explored in detail, the survival of which is at the mercy of Jason's own doubts about his sexuality and the fact that he also has a girlfriend. Kyle adds his own measure of stress to the melting pot and is unwilling to continue if Jason will not commit to their relationship instead of hiding and meeting in secret. Will Kyle understand Jason's need to maintain his jock reputation and remain in favour with all his adoring female fans at school?
Meanwhile Kyle's best friend Nelson has lessons that he must also learn in life. With his already high sex drive about to blow through the roof can he avoid the temptation of reckless and causal encounters with men? And even when he finds the man of his dreams can Nelson grow up in time enough to deal with a situation that could change his own life forever?
This book proves a thoroughly satisfying read and maintains a good pace. Although the boys may be high school teenagers they show that no matter what differences we each may have-self acceptance is surely the best lesson of all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Polished and professional, 23 Oct 2006
By Daniel Park "danielpark99" (West Yorkshire, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This novel is an improvement on Sanchez' first in the series "Rainbow Boys", which is high praise indeed bearing in mind this first novel is very well written. Rainbow High develops character relations in a polished and professional manner which bodes well for his concluding novel "Rainbow Road". For readers who enjoy seeing LGBT characters develop and mature realistically, without overly-annoying Americanisms, this series is for you.
