Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Bring the underwater adventures of Rainbow Fish to life on your PC with this wonderful interactive children's CD-ROM. With an assortment of charming characters and a huge variety of games, musical fun and activities children aged 3 to 7 years will be instantly spellbound.

Poor Rainbow Fish has had his scales stolen and only you can help. Solve the puzzles and complete the challenges to find the thieves and make him beautiful again. You'll meet friends along the way such as Head and Toe (the twin fish) and there are numerous games and activities to keep young minds entertained while teaching valuable skills such as recognition, problem solving, experimentation, logical thinking and creativity. A print shop lets you colour pictures on screen or print for later, and two difficulty levels make sure that younger children are able to join in the fun.

Easily installed, the simple interface ensures that navigation is a breeze (vital for younger PC users) and the help menu is available at all times. Use of the mouse and cursor will help develop computer skills and hand-eye coordination, and the print applications available will provide additional PC skills. With the educational benefits you would expect from Dorling Kindersley, Rainbow Fish will surely become a child's favourite. --Amber Harbour

Manufacturer's Description

Introduce children aged 3 to 7 to the most beautiful fish in the ocean

One stormy night while Rainbow Fish slept on the ocean floor, his beautiful, sparkling scales were stolen by three cunning crabs. Now Rainbow Fish needs help to get them back...

Children can join Rainbow Fish and his adorable friends in this underwater adventure. By completing a series of games and challenges, children will gradually piece together all the information they need to lead them to the crabs and the stolen scales. Every shape they match correctly, every melody they recognise and every action game they successfully complete will take them a little bit closer to finding the scales and making Rainbow Fish beautiful again.

My daughter recently read Rainbow Fish at her school so I thought this would be a nice gift for her. She hasn't stopped playing it for over a week. It looks fantastic and brings the book to life.

Could someone please lend me a computer so I can do some work?

Oh...and the free toy is now her favourite.

For software that has the ocean as its theme, Rainbow Fish is difficult to navigate - getting about is a matter of trial and error. It is too intellectually demanding for 3 - 7 year olds even on the easy setting. Some of the hand-eye co-ordination mouse skills required were a little too deft and speedy for my three year old and left her frustrated at having to repeat tasks. On the other hand, some of the animation providing clues for the game was very slow - again proving frustrating for a youngster demanding quick, if not immediate gratification. Also, the menu seems a bit of a con; it appears initially to offer lots of different adventures but whatever is clicked on offers the identical game.

In its favour, the animation is very good and combined with the dreamy music can be quite relaxing. It seems to hark back to a pace of life known prior to computing. There is also a lot of facets to the adventure so that it is interesting and repeatable. It is also quite cheap and it comes with a free beany fish - my three year old wants to know why it is a spotty fish and not a rainbow fish! The main thing is, I suppose, that despite its frustrations my daughter enjoys the software. However, I wouldn't place it in the top ranking of kid's software and it certainly doesn't go off the scale.

4.0 out of 5 stars Rainbow Fish Interactive Storybook & Ty Beanie Baby Lips Fis, 16 Sep 2002

This was tentatively purchased for our 3 year old daughter. We need not have worried as it was a first time hit, not only with her but her 8 year old brother.

The music in the background is consistently repetitive (addictive to the point of humming it around the supermarket) and the graphics are often truly adorable.

Ideal for a young starter, probably mostly appealing to little girls who like hide and seek tasks, I would certainly recommend this for birthday and Christmas gifts.
