The Rainbow Fish has been on our bookshelf for at least 2 years and is still a favourite with my children. It's stunning illustrations complement the simple story of a vain fish with no friends who finds that sharing his silver scales leads to happiness. It's moral is easy for small children to understand and discuss. I know it will be a favourite of ours for years to come.

Ignore the reviews about the fish 'buying his friends' and just enjoy a beautifully illustrated book. The pictures are simply delightful and the sparkly scales bring the story to life in a way that captures little one's interest perfectly.

Very lovely book with a really beautiful illustrations. Despite many talks between adults about the possible influence of the book on children I would not apply such a sophisticated approach... it is a simple story, which teaches children about sharing in a nice and easy way, which they can understand. Then it is up to the adult to say, how far we should go in sharing. My 4 years old really likes this book, especially because of a little blue fish.

I really enjoyed this story. More improtantly though so did the children,it held their attention for the complete story although I did adapt the story for my toddler group. By condensing the story.
Using visual aids, cutting out one large fish and enough small fish for each child to hold during the story. The large fish, which I held, had about a dozen scales cut out of holographic paper, I stuck these on to large fish with velcor spots. Each smaller fish had one velcro spot on. As the story reach the end each scale could be removed allowing the child to transfer it on to their own fish. This gave the toddlers something to focus on.
The intial story has a child friendly moral, easy to understand and is aimed at the over 3's. As stated above it can easily be worded for the younger age group.

Format: Paperback
'The Rainbow Fish is an international bestseller and a modern classic.
Eye-catching foil stamping, glittering on every page, offers instant child appeal, but it is the universal message at the heart of this simple story about a beautiful fish who learns to make friends by sharing his most prized possessions that give this book its lasting value.'

A story predominantly aimed at pre-schoolers, with mixed views on its message, but still a favourite in the reading corner for its 'glistening' attributes.
I have seen it as the 'source book' for many a book corner project with the children's own ideas of what the book means to them......usually some glitter and a bit of sparkly foil!
This 2007/NorthSouth Books paperback version is no exception, retaining that original unique format with 48 high quality pages, in the popular 'two-page spread' format, with sparkly scales a-glowing, even in the dark cave of the octopus:

"I have been waiting for you," said the octopus with a deep voice.
"The waves have told me your story.
This is my advice. Give a glittering scale to each of the other fish.
You will no longer be the most beautiful fish in the sea, but you will discover how to be happy."
"I can't...." the Rainbow Fish started to say, but the octopus had already disappeared into a large cloud of ink.....'

I love reading this book to my nephew. It is such a sweet story. So simple and yet entertaining. He loves it and I do too. It is a very nice way to teach children about sharing and pride. I just bought 2 of the same series and hope they are as good.

really lovely illustrations, the colours are vibrant, and my grandaughter absolutely loves it, at the moment it is her favourite
bedtime story, ( she is 1yr old) but her brother who is five loves to read it to her.
An all round winner.
