The Rainbow Fish has been on our bookshelf for at least 2 years and is still a favourite with my children. It's stunning illustrations complement the simple story of a vain fish with no friends who finds that sharing his silver scales leads to happiness. It's moral is easy for small children to understand and discuss. I know it will be a favourite of ours for years to come.

The Rainbow Fish 26 Dec 2010
Format:Paperback
I really enjoyed this story. More improtantly though so did the children,it held their attention for the complete story although I did adapt the story for my toddler group. By condensing the story.
Using visual aids, cutting out one large fish and enough small fish for each child to hold during the story. The large fish, which I held, had about a dozen scales cut out of holographic paper, I stuck these on to large fish with velcor spots. Each smaller fish had one velcro spot on. As the story reach the end each scale could be removed allowing the child to transfer it on to their own fish. This gave the toddlers something to focus on.
The intial story has a child friendly moral, easy to understand and is aimed at the over 3's. As stated above it can easily be worded for the younger age group.

The book is well above one or two star calibre.
It is high in OFSTED's list of acceptable books which is more than you can say for the claptrap that is constantly appearing for young children these days, if you can get them away from playing on the various machines or texting on mobile phones (and I am talking 5 and 6 year olds here!) in the first place!

The story's message is a lot to do with the person you are, or are becoming, or is based on the upbringing one has had, in my opinion.

The story line is nothing new - 'buying friendship' or 'realising that you CAN do without the odd thing or too......especially if it makes another one happy' - it is a personal choice.

Whichever you choose to believe this is aimed at reasonably young children and I have been teaching them for nigh on 40 years!
We get the sharing message across 9 times out of 10!
But, that is the result of good teaching - it is generally eroded when the child returns home!

Terrible condition and wrongly advertised
The story of the Rainbow Fish is a moral about sharing and is beautifully presented, however, upon arrival of this product I was horrified at the condition. Read more

Badly written, un-thought-through rubbish
One star because the twinkly foil scales are pretty. Otherwise, don't waste your money. The story is that:

if you are beautiful, no one will like you

if you... Read more
