5.0 out of 5 stars Sunny SA - its not all what it seems . . . ., 3 Aug 2005
I've never been to SA and in all honesty it has never been a place that I would put on my 'top ten places to see'. However, that view distinctly changed after a friend recommended I read 'Rainbow Diary'. I am now planning a month long visit to a county I know I have fallen in love with before I've been there.

John Malathronas book paints a picture of an amazingly diverse, yet challenged country. A place that is emerging from one of the most extreme instances of racial segregation but where hope for the future is strong. This book really challenges the current perception of who and what South Africa is. It was interesting to learn of the diversity, many cultures and beliefs and also to be inspired by one book to read many others on the same subject.

The bits I loved most were Malathronas's dance moves in the club in Durban (how big is YOUR fridge?!), the descriptive chapters on flora and fauna and most of all his visits to a township and the amazing school that exists purely because of one woman's determination to bring education to the underprivileged.

I have urged everyone I know to buy this book, not because I want a job as Mr Malathronas PR rep but because I think we in the West are blind to the real South Africa.

4.0 out of 5 stars A rare find - rough guides could learn alot!, 11 Jul 2006
By hunermand (manchester, uk) - See all my reviews
I bought this book because I was utterly appalled by the lack of insight into daily social politics given in guide books, like that of the rough guide, a so-called alternative publication. This book filled in gaps but more importantly is the commentry of an intelligent, aware and honest traveller. The book is touchingly human, no avoidance of issues but there's no preaching either. The book is not short on information, there is a great deal of humour and it's even poetic in parts.
I would definately recommend this book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't bother, 26 Jul 2005
By r l crowther (Stone, Staffs United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Terrible, i purchased this book to expecting to read an in depth account of what the real south africa is like in the new age. what i got was a series of accounts of lurid drug infused nights out with the occasional mention of south africa. I couldn't make it past the first couple of chapters.
