Format:Audio CD
Paints a good picture of what Rainbow was about, 'cause as the title says, it's 'The Best of. . .', not just 'Greatest Hits'. These seldom mean the same, and alongside the obvious attempts to hit the singles charts (successfully mostly), there are the magnificent Purplish moments of Rock bluster which adorned the early albums, most notably 'Stargazer' and 'A Light in the Black' and the dangerously close to Prog 'Gates of Babylon'. The Joe Lynn Turner era B-side 'Jealous Lover' is a baffling inclusion. 'Best of. .' was released too early to include anything from the last two albums from Turner's stint. Apart from 'Eyes of Fire' that's no great loss. A lot of this still sounds pretty good today and there's not a hint of the mental minstrelsy that was to come from Mr B. Actually, that can be fine too but just once in a while you still wish he'd plug something in and blast us away again.
