4.0 out of 5 stars enjoyable, light-hearted thriller 19 Nov 2011
By H. Beentje TOP 100 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
The plot (without spoilers): important people are getting kidnapped, and those in pursuit seem powerless th stop, or even trace, the kidnappers. Chance intersection of paths of a psychic medium and her investigative sidekick with an old lady muddies the waters - or clears them?

The writer: Victor Canning wrote many noverls, often with a thriller plot in the 1950-1970s. This one is from 1972.

My opinion: Canning has a very distinct voic - I don't think you should read his books too close together! He can be a bit samey on the moral musings of his characters, and on their personal thoughts. On the other hand, he is very good wih nature; his plots are loose but gripping, his personalities well fleshed out... enjoyable, light-hearted romp (if violent in places), and a good puzzle-mystery!

4.0 out of 5 stars Loved the Book & Loved the Movie 20 Jun 2010
By Donna - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I love Hitchcock and saw Family Plot, really enjoyed it and read the book. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The movie does divert from the book, however both are well done and worth the time to enjoy. Regarding the other review that states the book as lacking suspense and being predictable, I found the writing enjoyable and having a certain shock value that the movie (which is somewhat darkly comedic, though equally enjoyable) didn't have. If you read the book expecting that the movie precisely followed it, then you are likely to be disappointed. It's fairer to say that the book inspired the movie rather than to say that the screen play was written from the book. This is the first Victor Canning book I've read and am can say without doubt that it isn't the last.

2.0 out of 5 stars The Pattern didn't deliver 5 May 2000
By MattMcG - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I read this book after seeing Alfred Hitchcock's film version of it. After seeing the movie, I was quite inspired to read the book. Wow, was I ever wrong. The book had no suspense at all persay the predictable encounters between Eddie Shoebridge and Madam Blanche. The addition of the FBI men and the detective work that they do is a wonderful addition to this slightly dull book. The ending is the only reason that I gave this book two stars instead of one. All I can say is that if you do read Victor Canning (I don't) then go ahead and read this book.
