On the first few listens, I was slightly disappointed with the latest offering from Mr Consistent. It's unmistakeably a John Surman recording, it has much in common with a number of his celebrated solo recordings from the past and I was left with the feeling that, given that Surman apparently knocks out releases in his sleep, this was merely a knock about release. More fool I. Like, say, Picasso, the bottom line is that Surman's output does not seem to suffer from his productivity. Even if saxophone/clarinet and church organ does not constitute as heavenly a collaboration as, say, saxophone and choir (Proverbs and Songs, conducted by Howard Moody) saxophone and oud (Thimar) or a number of other highlights from Surman's diverse career, they work well together (even for someone not generally smitten by the sound of the organ) and, in combination, produce a full sound which nevertheless allows both instruments full space in which to breathe. Benefitting from Surman's rich, melodic, expressive but not ostentatious playing, the music is full of both religious grandeur and haunting and a more bucolic feel common to many a Surman recording. The thirteen originals vary in title from the self-explanatory "Step Lively!" (the most dynamic and direct number) to the atmospheric and contemplative "Stone Ground" "Circum I and II" and the concluding "Pax Vobiscum". Amongst the originals are two traditionals from very different traditions, one of the standouts in "Waly Waly" and the Negro spiritual "I'm Troubled in Mind." It's all rich enough to entertain us until the next Surman offering.
