John Rain (Kippei Shiina) is half Japanese and was raised in New York City. After leaving the US army and being trained in special ops, he becomes an assassin for hire. However just like Robin Hood, he only takes out bad guys. I think you can see where this is going.
As luck would have it he's hired to swiftly dispatch three corrupt Japanese politicians in Tokyo. He does this efficiently but ends up protecting one of the politician's daughters, a beautiful pianist.
The plot takes a few turns here and there, but essentially our hero and Miss Beautiful are chased around Tokyo by gangsters, the police (including an excellent Akira Emoto as Tatsu) and a deranged CIA boss played by a terribly hammy Gary Oldman.
It is stylishly shot and the fight scenes are fast and furious, but the whole enterprise lacks soul and the story has been told a thousand times before. The soppy romance between our knight in shining armour and his damsel in distress is terribly schmaltzy.
I had to persuade myself to see it through to the end, not because it was entirely hopeless, but it was all too predictable.
