Train Simulator 2012 is the latest in a series of train simulators provided through "Steam" which owe their origins to the defunct Microsoft Train Simulator.
On the plus side, the simulator is relatively stable - although computer crashes are a feature which really should be removed by this version (#3) - and if you possess a well specified PC, the graphics are superb. Raindrops on the windscreens are great for realism.
But that's when the problems begin. If you are to run on full graphics with the developers' "TSX" video enhancement option selected, anything other than a top of the range i7 PC with plenty of RAM and a beefy graphics card will lead to a jerky frame rate. The average laptop will not cope so "minimum" graphics and TSX switched off is essential in lesser machines. In this form, much of the advantage of this version of the software is lost.
Steam and/or the developers have clearly aimed this version at the US market. Most of the new addon packages are US route-based which although interesting does not really excite those steeped in UK or European rail lore. That said a few UK addons are appearing which are "TS2012 enhanced". Some are simply enhancements to existing routes which if you have already purchased the route for a previous version should be free upgrades. But they are not! For example, the charged-for "GWR King" addon provides a locomotive, the eponymous King Class locomotive in several forms, a rake of GWR coaches and only three scenarios, repeated as both normal and "career mode". Indeed, one of the three requires another, older addon to work, the lovely Falmouth Branch Line addon, and the remaining two scenarios simply make use of the modern, GWR/Western Region Oxford to Paddington route; King Class loco with modern aspect signalling and buildings! The term "rip-off" springs to mind!
And another problem...
Customer support is virtually non-existant. Why is that important? Well, having upgraded to this version, strange things happen. For example, I purchased the "Newcastle to York, Modern" addon some time ago. This has vanished from my options and I still await an explanation and response to my e-mail query. Afterall, I did pay for it! Recently, like today, the part of the "GWR King" addon which makes use of the Falmouth Branch Line has likewise vanished. I imagine because others like me have found that a combination of bugs such as other trains 'hiting' yours and an inability to correctly set swithches/points at station junctions make 'success' impossible, the developers have removed (to re-write?) this option? Or maybe not. Who knows since no one seems to think to inform purchaser of possible problems, fixes and so on.
But even after all that, is it worth buying? Well, yes. But don't expect miracles (or support)! Note to the developer; worry less about bringing out addon after addon (afterall, "trains -vs- zombies", I ask you!) and get the ones you do publish right, please!
