Product Description

The Definitive Collection of the celebrated BBC television series.

Celebrate a bygone era with this incredible collection of programmes from the BBC s much loved TV series RAILWAY ROUNDABOUT.

Prior to the publication of Dr Richard Beeching s landmark report The Reshaping of Britain s Railways, which in 1963 changed the face of rail travel in the UK forever, this series travelled the length and breadth of Britain filming the greatest locomotives, railways, stations and trains in operation during the late 1950s and early 1960s. The result is a unique document of a distinct period in British transport history, when steam and diesel remained in operation even while electrification was being rolled out across the Britain and Europe.

This collection brings together over 11 hours of RAILWAY ROUNDABOUT, taking in action from as far afield as Ireland, the Isle of Wight, Wales and even Europe, and also includes a special 3 hour journey back through time in the company of filmmaker P.B. Whitehouse, who revisits some of the series finest moments and provides exclusive commentary, offering an insight into the production of this cherished programme.

Rail fans everywhere should rejoice at the news that Railway Roundabout is back!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great DVD for the railway enthusiast. 24 Nov 2013

This is 11 hours of self-indulgent pleasure. Even more so if, like me you were around when these steam engines and branch lines were still in operation. A great buy and cheap at the price

4.0 out of 5 stars Good content 23 Nov 2013

I find the pictures have transferred to DVD very well, being bright and sharp. The content is very good, the only fault I can find is that the dubbed sound is too loud in places, loud enough to overpower the voiceover. Recommended for content.

4.0 out of 5 stars Railway nostalgia 20 Jan 2014
Verified Purchase
Having memories of this television programme jogged by this package really took me back. Good short articles of the railway situation in the late 1950's and early 1960's throughout the DVDs. However the most interesting of all was the disc covering European railways at that time, fascinating how they appear to be very behind Britain whereas now it is the other way round.
The one criticism found (as per others) was the soundtrack, often drowned by the dubbed railway noises.
Good value for money.

I am really pleased to have this collection of old TV series about railways. The programmes were originally broadcast in the late 1950's and 1960's and were a contemporary look at various aspects of the railway network. Until now I had only been able to obtain them in VHS tape format so I am more than happy to update to DVD.
