Book Description

10 Mar 2012 Shire Library
Railway posters have a huge appeal to the modern audience, but just what is it that appeals to us? Enduring images of iconic locomotives, bathing beauties and characters such as Sunny South Sam are testament to the persuasive power of the railway company marketing departments established in the late nineteenth century. Railway posters not only tell us about railway history and technology, architectural and engineering accomplishments, but they also give us insights into the cultural and social significance of the railways. The influence of the railway industry on our cities and coastlines and the development of leisure time and holiday resorts can be seen in the recurring images of ramblers, bathers and idyllic tourist destinations. This book explores the changing styles and functions of the railway poster from the early pre-grouping days through to the inter-war 'golden age', World War Two and the nationalised British Railways.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating but slightly flawed 18 July 2012
If you've ever visited a museum - any kind of museum - you've probably seen a browser-rack of Shire Books in the museum shop. Shire has a unique niche in the publishing world; it produces relatively slim, card-backed books offering an introduction to all manner of subjects; there are literally hundreds of titles in the series. What makes them special is the fact that they are written by experts in their respective fields, but are aimed at readers with any level of interest in the subject. You don't need any prior knowledge - if a title piques your curiosity you'll find that it tells you what you want to know, but without any condescension on the part of the author. It will also bring you up to date with current research in the field. Best of all, the books are amazingly cheap - especially through Amazon. The present title costs 5.24 (July 2012 price) for 64 packed pages including over 80 illustrations, all but four of which are in colour - surely a bargain which by any standards would be hard to beat!

This is one of three books recently published by Shire in association with The National Railway Museum at York - the others are `Early Railways 1569-1830' and `Railway Preservation in Britain'. I've reviewed all three, the other two were awarded five stars, but judged against the standards normally achieved by Shire this one is not quite in the same league. I'll do my best to explain why.

It seems to me that there are in essence three possible reasons for deciding to buy a book about railway posters. Bearing in mind the general focus of this publisher, the largest and most obvious group will be those with an interest in railways in general, a wide spectrum extending from the near-fanatical to the merely nostalgic.

I have yet to encounter a duff book from Shire, and this is no exception. A bite-size, well researched, well written and well-illustrated introduction to the world of Railway Posters. Highly recommended.
