Product Description

Product Description

The National Railway Museum in York has a large and varied collection of railway art and artefacts; this books shows over 200 of the best posters dating from the railways' heyday prior to nationalization. In this period, renowned poster artists of the calibre of Edward McKnight Kauffer, Tom Purvis and Cassandre were commissioned by the railway groups to promote not only their lines but also the most beautiful and appealing cities and towns in their areas for tourists to visit. The railway companies virtually invented the "package tour", and promoted it intensively not only in the UK but also in the USA. The introduction explains the history of the companies during the period covered, and examines their attitudes to poster advertising. The book is then divided into four sections, one for each of the railway groups: the resulting selection makes an analysis of poster art in the UK in its "golden age" of the Twenties and Thirties. Extended captions explain the context of the works, and information about the artists is provided. The authors are on the curatorial staff of the National Railway Museum, York.

I bought this book for a relative at Christmas, but snuck a look at it myself. It's a great book to look at, and the poster illustrations are very evocative of times past. There's a little bit of descriptive text and historical information with each illustration, but this is primarily a book to look at rather than read, I think. It's paperback (sadly) but it is printed on glossy paper, and the printing and reproduction standard is high - which I guess is what accounts for the slightly high price (as the contents are all public property, being reproduced from the NRM's collection.)

Railway Poster Magic. 21 July 2010
By Leo
Format:Paperback
I must say that this book has given me more pleasure than any other that I've bought for years!
It completely captures the atmosphere of the heyday of the railway poster, when artists seemed to turn the restrictions placed upon them by the printers to their advantage and they turned out some wonderfully striking designs.
The sheer number and quality of the illustrations in the book, mean that if I'm not in the mood for reading, just thumbing through the pages is sufficient to recreate that atmosphere for me!

Yesterdays railways 7 Mar 2012

Format:Paperback
A wonderful collection of railway poster art depicting travel and transport of a bygone era.
The unique illustrations are accompanied by informative text which make a fine "coffee table" book that you can always seem to find something new in every time you pick it up. Well worth the money and not only for railway buffs!
