Product Description

Synopsis

The second volume provides a detailed study of the company's locomotive and traffic operations, and also looks at the superstructure of stations and bridges, signalling and loco sheds. Again, a wealth of illustration completes this authoritative account of one of Britain's most interesting railways.

4.0 out of 5 stars Railway traffic & operation, Workington to Penrith., 5 Jun 2001
By A Customer
Describes the railway traffic and operation, for the lines between Workington and Penrith via Cockermouth and Keswick.

About 160 pages, with separate chapters covering Mineral & Industrial traffic, Passenger traffic, Bridges, Permanent way, Signalling and gas lighting, Operational aspects, Locomotive story, Senior and specialist staff, and concluding with The glory of Lakeland's northern railway.

Liberally illustrated with photographs ranging from the 19th century to those nearer the closure of services. The photos are complemented by well considered and researched text.

Companion volume to Volume 1, by the same author, which described the railway line.

Excellent value paperback book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Describes the line from Workington to Penrith via Keswick, 5 Jun 2001
By A Customer
Good decription of the railway lines between Workington and Penrith, via Keswick and Cockermouth.

After setting the scene, in terms of the beginnings of the railways and how they were built, the book then describes each section of the line. Separate chapters decribe Workington to Brigham, Cockermouth, Embleton to Braithwaite, Keswick, East of Keswick, and Redhills Junction to Penrith.

There are about 128 pages, which include photographs on most pages, with well thought out text. The photos range from 19th century to the late 20th century, with mostly steam engines portrayed. Track layouts at most of the stations are illustrated, and there are several building drawings.

Volume 2, by the same author, describes Traffic and Operation.

Overall a good value paperback book.
