5.0 out of 5 stars "A joyous celebration of railways and the sea", 19 Oct 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Rails to the Sea (Hardcover)
In 1868 H.W. Baker exclaimed"O what transport of deligh"t as he extolled the pleasures of of rail travel. "Rails To The Sea" truly reflects such a joy, and the author is to be congratulated on a superb book which will delight all readers. John Hadrill provides an outstanding account of the fascinating railway links to Btitain's seaside resorts. The book is a joyous celebration of over 160 years of rail journeys to the coast. Drawing upon some 50 years of his own personal travel experiences the author skilfully allows us to partake in numerous excursions to various parts of of the coastal network. "All aboard !" Readers will enjoy the friendly welcome as the trains ease out of the stations and leisurely meander over hill and dale. The author knows each and every station and resort, not to mention the intervening countryside, and he provides us with a vivid and accurate scenario. He has a sharp eye for detail, and gives a fascinating account of the evolution of rail travel, and changes in the British social fabric over the last 150 years. The annual excursion to the seaside has been a major British institution for decades. The book starts with a general outline of the rail network and goes on to describe the origins and growth of the railway excursion. It covers an exciting period and the reader will enjoy a peep into the world of Thomas Cook, and the development of the crack expresses. Then the author takes us on a comprehensive tour of the surviving coastal network. What a delight ! The balmy coasts of Devon and the South and East Coasts all beckon. You can easily imagine that you are aboard the "Devonian" or on your way to connect with an overnight ferry to Europe. To read the book is to have a first-class seat on the train. You can sit back and enjoy the scenery as the author paints the ever-unfolding panorama. Wonderful examples of this are to be seen on the sections on Scotland's East and North Coasts, the fabulous route to the Western Isles, and the "Three Coasts of Wales." The narrative is inspiring and readers will be tempted to rush of to purchase tickets to Dawlish and the West Coast of Scotland. The strength of "Rails To The Sea" is that it reflects the joy of travel, rather than technical matters. It provides a welcome break from the everyday rush and stress most of us have to endure, and it will be a source of pleasure to the general reader as well as railway enthusiasts. The numerous photographs, many in colour, are outstanding and perfectly complement the text. The overall quality is superb and the book is a striking testimony to the author's expertise and dedication to travel. It is highly recommended and will make the perfect Christmas gift for a wide range of readers and all who enjoy the romance of rail travel.j
