Product Description

Product Description

Like his first saga, Masterton based this explosive novel on a real life character (Collis P. Huntington) using the transcontinental rail service as his theme. Collis Edmonds' ambition is to blast a railroad through the heart of America - especially after seeing his family made bankrupt by investing in a similar but worthless scheme. Edmonds is portrayed as a gambler, drinker, chauvinist and arrogant womaniser; the plot is well crafted, paying meticulous attention to detail. An epic read.

4.0 out of 5 stars MORE ABOUT AMERICAN POLITICS THAN RAILROADS! 24 Sep 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is my fourth Graham Masterton book, having previously read White Bones, Burial, and Lady of Fortune. If you enjoy this book you will quite likely also find Lady of Fortune to be to your taste.

To be honest I had expected to be reading much more about life based around the actual construction itself, laying the tracks, building the stations, the tunnels, bridges, locomotives, rolling stock, etcetera, however apart from blasting their way through the Sierras, and the arrival of the first engine this story was more of a biography about real life character Collis Huntington desperately trying to raise money anyway he can in between his gambling, drinking and womanizing.

It is however an interesting and informative read and quite a long story from a great writer, but it is based more on the life and politics of America 150 years ago than the actual railroad itself.

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't get hung up on the title 9 Sep 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Although the underlying theme is about building the trans continental railway, the book concentrates on the characters, the occasionally desperate connivance needed and a very good portrayal of life and times in the pre-Civil War United States. I found the description of early New York, Washington and San Francisco fascinating and all the detail seems very well researched. Not a great book, but certainly an interesting and enjoyable read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Overall a good read 7 Sep 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Very interesting subject matter with strong characters throughout. Pace of the book was good and the only thing that spoilt it was that the ending was rounded off too quickly for me; would have liked to read more about the construction phase after the Sierras had been mastered.
Don't be put off if you're not a 'train anorak' as there's more than enough adventure off the tracks!!

5.0 out of 5 stars based on fact 30 Aug 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
great writer, very descriptive 1850's New York and 1860's San Francisco wild west , storekeeper, markets, red light areas and the people who influenced a growing city. Plus the huge change a transcontinental railway will make. Very enjoyable. Will read again in a years time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rivetting 20 Aug 2013

No pun intended, but one of those chance reads that I could not put down. History made real and entertaining. If half is based on fact it is even more, it is a book that should be read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating glimpse of US history
Chapters seem endless but the story is a fascinating glimpse of life around the start of the Civil War and the railroad pioneers. Fiction meets fact.
