Fun:
I have used train simulator software for many years starting with the now defunct Microsoft Train Simulator. I bought Railworks and was pleasantly surprised when it updated automatically to Railworks2. This is, in fact, a direct, but much changed, descendant of the original MS product and a user of MS Train Sim will notice the similarity of keyboard controls in Railworks expert mode. But they will also notice that much of the flexibility to select your own game parameters (Starting location, Destination, Weather conditions etc.) has been lost. Hence the 4 star rating.

That said, the stability of the new simulator, the quality of graphics (stunning!) and ease of driving with the all new user interface is certain to be appreciated by anyone who uses this game but does not want to be a train simulator anorak every time they play it.

The biggest downside for anyone used to the amazing wealth of free add ons available for the original MS Train Sim is that the add ons for this product are almost all at extra cost.

For me, the improvements have made the migration to Railworks2 very worth while.

Railworks Re-worked 7 Nov 2010
Fun:
This is actually a makeover of the previous Railworks edition and not a new game. Very important to note if you already have Railworks you do *not* need to buy this version. You will automatically be upgraded to Railworks 2 via your Steam account.

What's new? Not a huge amount and there's a bit of debate on the train simming forums whether this warrants a "2" in the title. More like RW 1.3. The menu system in the game has undergone an overhaul and it is possible to select your drive by route or traction type. A new cab HUD has been added in driver mode but opinion is again divided on what this adds to the experience. My own opinion is neutral to not particularly happy, I can see why some have called it the "Fisher Price" HUD or Triang "Big Big" trainset.

The core of the sim is largely unchanged, that is none of the bugs or enhancements requested over the three years since Rail Simulator first came out have been addressed apart from the ability to put working level crossings in to a route. So no track superelevation, realistic cab movement, distant mountains (in fact distant hills look worse now - like white emulsion paint), projected headlights etc. etc. No new content either, not even reskins of the default Mark One coaches into more varied liveries. The physics on much of the traction is still questionable verging on the arcade rather than realistic train performance. No new or improved functionality for the route builders either.

On the plus side, Railworks does look good and from the point of view of the train simming hobby we are unlikely to get another product any time soon that offers the content creation sandbox so it's important we try and make a go of it. However it is also incumbent on the developer and publisher that in return for the community support they also start looking fairly soon at the fundamental improvements that would make it a world class product.

Seriously Good But.. 27 Dec 2010
By Diggle
Fun:
Tehe Railworks 2 railway simulator has good graphics and generally runs smoothly, although it froze a couple of times for me when a train was simply travelling along a track. Plenty of detail has gone into the locomotives and stock. At stations the carriage doors open and zombie-like 'people' walk about. During some of the included scenarios I was confused by the signalling system which would stick on a red light for no apparent reason but could be passed without any problem.
The simulation is so realistic you can simply drive your train for many minutes on a fairly long main line with nothing much happening. Whilst this experience is probably good for a serious railway enthusiast I enjoy moving locomotives and railway vehicles around interesting track layouts probably edited by myself.
I did not find the manuals or tutorial videos that helpful, particularly in respect of the World Editor. The Editor did not work for me as demonstrated on the videos. Whilst I have previously quite happily developed my own routes with Trainz I have given up on the Railworks 2 World Editor as just baffles me.
When loading Railworks 2 it connects with the Steam website which amongst other things sends me advertisements to buy add-ons. I find this an unwanted intrusion.
In summary I think Railworks 2 does not put extreme demands on computing power and is a good simulator for the more serious enthusiast but if you want to have fun with routes and lots of free stuff maybe it's worth considering one of the versions of Trainz.
