Product Description

Product Description

There is a distinct need to provide railway enthusiasts with something that goes beyond the straight forward guide and this is exactly what the abc Rail Guide 2012 does. This invaluable guide puts all the information that the enthusiast will need on a day-by-day basis into a single volume. Apart from number sequences, the book also includes: - The legalities as to how, where and when enthusiast activity is legal and illegal and the thorny position of photography - TOC maps with contact details (including web-site details) for each TOC and other operators with information about services and stock operated; along with details of leased or owned stock in store or on order - Private train operators, preserved locomotives and multiple-units along with exported power The contents are fully revised for 2012 with a brand new illustrative selection of colour images and maps. The book is fully illustrated in colour throughout and being a traditional 'abc'-style number book, the information is of the highest quality and will be sought after by enthusiasts nationwide.

This is a very good book published to a very high standard on top quality paper. However, every year, the same mistakes seem to appear. Yet again it misses out nearly 20 class 60 locomotives that DBS still own and also a large number of Class 150 that FGW operate have been omitted for the 3rd year running.
There are also a few omissions in the list of stations with the new stations opened during 2011 not included (Buckshaw Village is one example)
While it is accepted that these books can never be 100% accurate due to the dynamic nature of its content, these are things that the publishers should be rectifying for future editions by proper reseacrh and taking action on feedback received.
Come on Ian Allan/Colin Marsden - please make an effort for the 2013 edition to correct these errors.

Good in parts 20 April 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This has all the information needed to keep up with the changes year on year but it is difficult to append changes obtained week to week from the web should one wish to. The paper on which it is printed does not lend itself to the use of most gel type pens, or even old fashioned biros, as the ink takes forever to dry. And why does Abellio Greater Anglia come in between Merseyrail and Northern Rail in an otherwise alphabetically arranged order?
These misgivings apart the maps are good as are most of the photos and there is a comprehensive list of all the bewildering livery, pool, site, depot, operator and owner codes so much in vogue these days.
