mostly amazing 1 Sep 2009
I must start by saying that this series would have easily achieved 5 stars if it weren't for the disc 8 motion picture attempt (I will explain later)

I am going to split this review into two- beginning with the 7 discs of series, then I will do the disc 8 motion picture on its own.

The series:

I will begin by saying- this series is spectacular! One of the best animes in a very, very long time. It has everything from romance to giant mecha battles to just some harmless slice of life fun.
I don't really want to try and explain the plot because I will just end up confusing myself and probably spoiling it for you. So........

I could recommend this series to anyone. Every character is well thought out and beautifully designed and the story sets up each and every motive/ action in such a way that you care about the entire cast. Don't go thinking that just because I mentioned mecha battles this is a series of brainless action because it isn't, there is plenty more than that to be found here. (Again I won't attempt to explain too much)
All of this being said the action is still worth mentioning because it is perfectly executed and fluidly animated. All of this can become incredibly immersive when coupled with all the beautifully designed locations and mech robot-ish things.

Series rating: 5 stars

The motion picture:

This is an effort to get all 26 episodes into one feature length movie..... and it just doesn't work.
I will admit this movie still looks hauntingly beautiful but in terms of the plot- this effort falls way short of the series excellent standard. Because the creators had such limited running time to work with they had to make huge sacrifices with the story. Many key scenes are missed out (some of which are central to the story) this makes the entire film difficult to understand and impossible to keep up with. It just isn't quite there.

Motion picture rating: 3 stars

So I meet somewhere in the middle at 4 stars for the whole package. This series is 100% worth getting despite disc 8. So please don't hesitate and go for it.... NOW!

Thanks for reading!
