Product Description

Everyone you know is dead.

Reports of mob violence begin to appear in the news as more and more major cities go silent. Rumors fly about the nature of the “rioters”, claiming that the dead have risen to prey on the living. In the Midwest City of Springfield Missouri, all Law Enforcement Officers are called out for field duty. Nothing in their training could possibly prepare them for what they faced.

Corrections Officer Wylie Grant is sent into the field to help set-up a checkpoint in a remote section of the county. When they confront the rioters, they discover for themselves that they are facing the living dead. Wylie and National Guard Corporal Chrissy Wilder are the only ones to survive the encounter. Alone and cut off, they must fight their way back to the Nathanael County Jail where the few remaining officers are attempting to regroup.

Finding himself leading the rescue efforts, Wylie must choose between his sworn duty as an officer and his own duty to his family. While coping with the loss of friends and family members, they learn that a government “containment protocol” will soon be in effect. Once established, no one will be allowed in or out of the city.

Facing the realization that no one is coming for them, they must face the harsh truth that the government they thought was their ally has become yet another enemy in a world gone mad.

Can Wylie reach his family in time?

About the Author

D.A. Roberts was born in the small town of Lebanon, Missouri. Growing up on the farm gave him plenty of opportunities to cultivate a fertile imagination. Encouraged by his mother, he dreamed of one day becoming a famous writer. An avid reader, D.A. enjoys reading more than watching television. A diverse career path has helped him create a unique view of the world. He’s worn the hats of a soldier, a factory worker, a bouncer, a lab technician, a Security Officer and most recently a Corrections Officer. He draws on all of these experiences to bring his writing to life on a very human level. He married Annette in the summer of 1993 and has been happily married ever since. Their three teenage sons Nathan, Nic and Noah keep them both busy and are their pride and joy. They have an English Mastiff named Xander, who is a big part of their lives. D.A. loves to camp, hunt, fish, hike and Geocache. He also enjoys old-school pen and paper role-playing games. When not writing or on duty as a Corrections Officer, he enjoys spending time with his family. A good cup of coffee, a warm fire and a good book are his guilty pleasures. And yes...like his character Wylie Grant...a little Bushmills Irish, once and a while.

Great read - I felt I struggled a little in the beginning, the gun detail was a bit lost on me to be honest, however towards the final chapters the author really ramps up the pace and I was actually holding my breath in parts. Well done for a picture well painted, can't wait to get my teeth into #2.

An amazing emotional rollercoaster throughout. The characters are amazing and lovable and their quick wit made me laugh out loud on a few occasions. The book is action packed all the way through as threats come from the living and the undead, i was on the edge of my seat most of the way through. Cannot wait for the next one. A definite must read for zombie lovers

Excellent book, finished on a cliffhanger & I'm really hoping the 2nd book is going to be just as good. The characters are really strong & you can connect with them as they come to terms with what's happening around them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Action packed, fast moving read 26 Jan 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I read this as a recommendation from a Zombie Book of the Month, but then again I read a lot of post-apocalyptic fiction so I guess I would have got around to it eventually!

For me, the book didn't start too well. It felt a bit stilted and I thought it was going to be hard going. To be fair to the author, there was a lot of back information there to set the scene, but it still came across as very stilted.

Then, the book really picks up. It moves at quite a pace, with lots of action and just enough description. There are good characters too, with a male and a female lead. The guys is quick and clever but also very human. The female lead is a real 'lock and load' lead, which I really liked.

The zombies are pretty good with crawlers, shamblers and shreikers. The usual good guys in zombie books aren't always the good guys and there are plenty of the living to look out for too.

One thing that did get a bit long winded sometimes was all the guns. Endless types of guns, types of bullets, and use and collections of guns. But, I could put up with that as the story moved really fast.

Can't wait for the follow up. There must be a follow up as it can't be left to end like that...
