This 3 CD set sure crams in a lot of George Jones. 86 tracks taken from the Starday and Mercury catalogues. As even a casual listen will confirm, these early years of Georges lengthy career were some of his best. These tracks date from the late 1950's to the early 60's. Very early 60's I reckon because the out of copyright yardstick has been used to measure the content.
At this time, George had almost created the sound that he wanted. It resonates with the sound of the East Texas honky tonks where he started his career, but doesn't as some of the blurbs claim, tip over into wild rock-a-billy. This is solid Country music, no trace here of the countrypolitan culture in Nashville, neither is there the treadmill approach that Musicor subjected George to in the later 1960's.
A lot of the tracks will be familiar, Why Baby, Why, Ragged But Right, White Lightnin', Who Shot Sam?, etc, which rightly enjoy classic status. There are others though, that stop you in your tracks. Tall, Tall, Trees for instance is a beauty, and if George Jones had stopped recording then and there, we would remember him for it. Others that compare are Accidentally On Purpose, and the last track of all is a particular favourite, Life To Go. Just listen as George wrings the emotion out of this weeper.
The nice touch on this reissue is the number of duets that are included. A word of warning as some are a bit duff, but it is still good to hear George with the likes of Sonny Burns, Virginia Spurlock, and Jeanette Hicks.
Anyway, its good to have all these tracks in one box, even though there is plenty of duplication with previous reissues. For anyone coming new to George Jones then you are in for a real treat. This release by Fantastic Voyage gives very acceptable sound, very good notes and discography by Dave Penny. This is what authentic country music used to be like. Grab it and play it.
