Brilliant Book 18 Feb 2006
Format:Paperback
I love this book. Before reading it, I really didn't know much at all about Etta James. Her name was familiar to me and I knew she sang 'At Last', but that was about it. I had no idea of the trials and tribulations that she went through in her life. The reason why I rate this book so highly is the fact that she is so brutally honest and upfront about everything she has done in her life whether it was wrong or right. From drug abuse, violence and criminal activity, she never sugar coats the bad things she has done. Etta is not afraid to paint herself in a bad light at certain times and this I can respect her for. The book was very, very entertaining, funny and sad at times but you feel quite uplifted by the end because she was able to get her life back on track. I would recommend this book for fans of Etta and also people who want to learn more about her, you wont be dissapointed.

Honest 29 April 2002
Format:Paperback
Unlike the biographies of Aretha Franklin and Gladys Knight, James tells her story like it really was. She leaves nothing to the imagination. Her touching on other artist whose paths she crossed reveals tibits of info they should have included in their stories but didn't. It's an eye opener and one of the best I've ever read. Thanks Miss Peaches

road rage. 5 April 1999
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
not your typical black entertainer from the middle of the century tale of life on the stage and on the road, etta james' _rage to survive: the etta james story_ is as important as a historic account of society from the 1920s through present day as it is as a personal testiment to one woman's struggle to survive. unapologetic and non-judgemental, james relates the facts of her life in a no-nonsense way; she boldly tells the truth about those who have crossed and encouraged her with compassion and respect. moreover, james reveals her own personal struggle to survive as drug addiction and self-doubt threatened to destroy her. a true diva with the heart and soul of a real person, etta james takes on an emotional journey that all but lets us relive all her pain and glory. the next time hollywood is looking for a _what's love got to do with it_ biopic, they need no look no further than etta "peaches" james' tale.
