Another Smith epic 6 Feb 2009
By edzshed
Format:Paperback
A stompingly massive novel, but it's a really good read, a true improvement on the previous Courtney instalment. Many authors would have split this into 3 novels, but not old Wilbur and to be honest it's all the better for it.

If as I am you are working your way through the Courtney series then this is definatly worth a go, one interesting point is that we now have 2 characters again named Sean and Garry Courtney, these characters are cleverly written in that they share many of the qualities of their name sakes but also are very different; I can't wait to read the next one which largly features these two characters.

Although titled as fiction this is an incredibly eye opening account and comparison of the lifestyles, political opinions, attitudes and significant events that existed and occurred in and around the sixties in South Africa. I would rate this as one of the top five Wilbur Smith novels as it contains such meticulous and well researched content. As good if not better than a factual historical account of the beginnings of the black South African struggle for political power.

Format:Paperback
A superb mix of class and culture, of race and origin in south afrike of old, hold the setting for this fast moving novel. Smith tells of heartbreak and racism through the eyes of the surpressed with such vivid realism that on some occasions this book becomes an almost morbid fascination. If read as part of the series as a whole this book is a gripping tale after very few pages.
