Although she's little more than a child the events of her past have forged a driving determination to rise above her beginnings. But when she applies for a job as a nurse Connie's turned down: her mother was forced by poverty to work the streets and the Bell name is tainted. Bitterly hurt but undaunted, Connie's soon assistant housekeeper at the Grand Hotel and saving hard for her own business. When her path crosses Dan Stewart's, though, everything Connie's ever dreamed of is threatened. 4.0 out of 5 stars The twisted hand of life and the power of the family., 9 Jan 2002
By A Customer
You are invited into the life and torment of Connie before she is old enough to understand what is really happening. She witnesses the beating of her surgate father and the twists and turns that her mother goes through to avoid the workhouse.

She learns to hate the Steward family and all that stand for inculding the death of her mother, grandmother and brother. She starts her working life in the one place that her family fear, the workhouse. Her fortunes change when she gains a position at the Grand Hotel as assistant house-keeper. Her improved fortunes are ripped away from her by both the Stewards and the Clonnel. Leaving to face the world alone...

The story continues to lead you through her life and its twists and turns that are faced when you do not have either the money or the family to use to your own advantage.

This is an excellent book which keeps you reading with complete wonder to the very end.
