Product Description

Originally released in 1971, Raga: A Journey into the Soul of India documents the life of sitar master Ravi Shankar in the late 1960s and early 1970s, following him on his return to India to revisit his guru, Bengali multi-instrumentalist and composer, Baba Ustad Allauddin Khan. It further explores Shankar s life as a musician and teacher in the United States and Europe, initiating those in the West to the exceptional world that is Indian classical music and culture. Through rare and candid footage shot in both India and the United States, Raga sheds light on Shankar s influences and collaborations, from Allauddin Khan to his famed dancer brother Uday Shankar, to his associations with Western musicians Yehudi Menuhin and George Harrison. Fully narrated by Shankar himself, Raga reveals music as the soul of India and of Shankar s life. The premiere DVD release of Raga features a digitally re-mastered 35mm print optimized to modern color range resolution and standard and a fully re-mastered audio soundtrack.

soul sessions 15 Feb 2011
a beautiful rendering of some beautiful music. this transports you, your senses, and yes, your soul (i reckon) to a loftier realm. one thing amazing about indian music is how its scales contain all sorts of half and quarter notes our western music only hints at. and how the rhythm players keep their super complex weavings is amazing. (unless they rely on us losing count, though i doubt it ;-). searing stuff

A disappointment 10 Aug 2011
I was disappointed with this DVD, I was expecting a lot of music but it was not there. This is a re-release of an earlier VHS film and it shows, not much effort has been made to improve the picture. It is also very dated. Best avoided.

Raga 13 Nov 2010

This is an incredibly beautiful, informative and moving film. It was originally produced by the Beatles' Apple Corps in the early 1970s, but the visual and audio quality of the DVD is superb. It is only available in the US and having it imported through Amazon to the UK was not cheap, but for anyone devoted to or inquisitive about Indian classical music, this film is priceless. An added bonus are the MP3 tracks based on the DVD which can be downloaded free of charge with every purchase.

A Must See 17 Nov 2010

This is a must see for any Ravi fan and indeed for any fan of yoga, kirtan, or Indian music.
A brief appearance from George Harrison is interesting as an historical point and shows how the sitar made it across into western music.
I would highly recommend this DVD to anyone with an interest in World Music as well as those who would identify with any of the categories above.
Hari Om to the maestro, Ravi Shankar.

Gorgeous 26 July 2011

Having been fortunate enough to be immersed by music (particularly, classical Indian) from a young age, I have been very lucky in getting to see/hear some gems along the way. This film is certainly one of those. A STUNNING insight into a man that I have nothing but admiration and love for. His soul and spirit are there for all to see - Most strikingly however is his devotion to his art form and utter love for Indian music/culture.

Utterly inspired. Ravi - you are a legend and my guru from afar.
