After a strong start to this series Nguyen makes a welcome return to the music of Raff with this impressive disc. This disc give her more scope to impress, and impress she does, the music is more virtuosic than in Volume 1, which is borne out from the first few bars of the Fantasie-Sonate, the second of the composers three sonatas and probably the most romantic, Here Nguyen gives a strong impassioned performance, one to savour. This is followed by the Variationen Über Ein Originalthema, the work opens with an Andante before the Theme is announced, this is then followed by a series of twenty variations before a a Finale: Moderato maestoso brings this impressive work to a close. This work gives ample opportunity for the pianist to give full vent to their ability and technique, and Nguyen comes out flying. The final work on the disc is the Vier Klavierstücke and while they might not be as impressive as the other two works presented on this disc, they are still highly enjoyable and played with great panache.
