Book Description

Everyone needs to be a hero at one point in their life.

The small town of Elliot Lake will never be the same again after Zoe, a high school senior from Elliot Lake, and five of her friends take shelter in an abandoned uranium mine during a violent thunderstorm. Over the next few days, Zoe’s hearing sharpens drastically… to supernatural levels. She tells her friends, only to learn that four others have an increased sense as well. Zoe is determined to use her new power for good, while trying to keep her growing feelings for Kieran, the new Scottish boy from their group, under control.

Fashioning themselves into superheroes, the group tries to stop the strange occurrences happening in their little town. Muggings, break-ins, disappearances, and murder begin to hit too close to home. It leads the team to think someone knows about their secret – someone who wants them all dead.

An incredulous group of heroes. A traitor in the midst. Some dreams are written in blood.

Join Zoe in this free paranormal suspense book. It is part one of the Senseless Series dealing with supernatural powers and first love. With it's comic book appeal, you can't help but try to figure out who the murderer is.

Sometimes following your heart and following your gut don't always give you the answer you want.

    More About the Author

Wanita May grew up in the fruit belt of Ontario - St.Catharines. Crazy-happy childhood, she always has had a vivid imagination and loads of energy.

The youngest of six -- four older brothers, and a sister -- taught her at a young age to be competitive in all aspects of life.

At sixteen, she began competing in athletics (track and field) and before she turned seventeen, she was representing Canada in high jump. She continued to compete, breaking Canada's JR High Jump record (1.92m - 6' 3 1/2" for those metric-ly challenged). She attented University of Toronto, and Kansas State University - winning CIAU's and becoming All-American 6x - NCAA Indoors Runner Up + more.

But you're not interested in her athletic career - unless of course you're curious to know she stands 1.70m (5'7") and has jumped 20cm over her head on more than one occassion. She's represented Canada at the World Championships, World Jrs., won Francophone Games, and loved every minute of every competition. From the grueling workouts, the crazy weights she lifted on her back, the days she thought her lungs were going to spit out of her mouth for lack of oxygen, the travelling around the world and the opportunity to read - her favourite past time.

Wanita and her husband run an online business, dealing in antiques and collectables - particularly jewelry and porcelain (one of the business' website: ).

After her father passed away in 2009, from a six-year battle with cancer (which she still believes he won the fight against), she began to write again. A passion she'd loved for years, but realized life was too short to keep putting it off.

Her first book, Rae of Hope - from the Chronicles of Kerrigan - is available now, along with Dark Nebula - the second book in the series.

She is currently represented by Dawn Dowdle of Blue Ridge Literary Agency. Wanita is a writer of Young Adult, Fantasy Fiction and where ever else her little muses take her.

    3.0 out of 5 stars ALRIGHT FOR A FREEBIE! 12 Oct. 2014

I'm giving it 3 stars because it's free and I think teenagers might like it,for me it was childish and didn't have much excitement through it. I am Scottish and Kieran was not, annoyed me that this character was supposed to be from Scotland but he spoke English! ! The author should have looked in to this a bit more!! We don't say "ol" we say "al" English say "bugger" us?not a lot, and we don't say "bollocks", again English. Just a small example of how reading it drove me nuts!

    4.0 out of 5 stars Amazinglygreat 18 April 2014
    Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I brought this book because it was free and I just thought that it would be good. But it surprised me with a gang of 5 teens spending the night in a mine during a freak storm. But it was that one night that changed them. Each teen granted a sense power. Through this book part 1 you just essentially find out what happened in how they got their powers, what they do with them. The downside to this book is that there's not ally of excitement and action just th getting their powers as after that they `'re learning to use them. It also cut out and had a very weird sudden ending with a Cliff hanger, which personally I don't think made any sense. It would have just been much better and more understandable to combine parts 1 and 2 in the same book. Why this wasn't do not know. But if your for freak storms and mines turning normal teens into mutant powered teens and using those powers to save and help others. Then by all means get this book. My only other thing is that from the blurb I conclude that part 2 is better and probably has more action with th he teens hunted and pro ppl le trying to kill them due to their powers. You could just read part2 first and then read part 1 for the background and how it all began. Which is why I give this book 4 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Young Adult Superhero Story (Ends on a Cliffhanger) 10 Aug. 2014

    Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Zoe is a senior in high school. She and her group of five friends are having fun at the school bonfire, held at a long-closed uranium mine.

When a freak storm hits, Zoe, Brent, Heidi, and Rylee decide to take refuge in the abandoned mine. Seth and a new guy from Scotland, Kieran, do their best to scare the others in the creepy tunnels.

Getting lost, attacked by rabid animals, or drowning are the least of their worries.

Brilliant author W. J. May's Radium Halos Part One is an excellent young adult superhero story. The characters were well defined, and the story is interesting and moves along at a great pace. It does end on a cliffhanger, but thank goodness Part Two is available.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice Start to A Series 12 Mar. 2014
    By Justine - Published on
    Format:Kindle Edition
Radium Halos is a different kind of superhero story, but it is definitely just as enjoyable as all of your favorites. Maybe the whole group of friends being accidentally exposed to a strange matter that gives them super abilities plot isn't exactly new, but the way that May tells it keeps the story fresh and exciting.

I loved that the abilities were derived from the senses, as it seems more likely to actually happen. Amplifying what is already present makes a lot more sense than powers just being developed out of thin air. Having the group learn more about their powers and slowly come to realize how they can push themselves really added to the pacing of the novel.

Besides, who doesn't love a good Origins story?

The characters of Radium Halos are excellent as they all have their unique personalities. Both Zoe and Brett proved to be interesting narrators that were able to keep the attention of the reader. They managed to have different voices that still transitioned smoothly. Kieran is a perfectly mysterious character. It's hard not to make some predictions about him, just as it's difficult to determine a solid opinion of the guy. I'd love to learn more about Rylee, Heidi and Seth in the future.

Radium Halos has moments that will make you laugh and even more moments that will keep you at the edge of your seat, waiting to find out what will happen next. From the very beginning, readers are drawn into the story of these six teens, all the way to the sharp cliff of an ending. I enjoyed reading Radium Halos and cannot wait until the release of part two.

3.0 out of 5 stars Short, sweet and left me wanting more! 30 April 2014
    By Fantasybkgirl - Published on
    Format:Kindle Edition
Radium Halos is a short and sweet read. It left me wanting more from this story and the characters.

Zoe and her friends take cover in an old mine when a sudden thunderstorm hits. The next day they each realize that they have some kind of supernatural sense. Each one is different from the others. The only one who did not receive any kind of supernatural sense is the new guy Kieran. They all decide for now that they are going to keep this all between them and not tell anyone else. They want to learn and develop their new senses more.

Since this is a short book we only get a glimpse of what is to come. I liked the characters and the plot is interesting. It is just starting to develop. I'm excited to read more and see what the author does with this story. This e-book was provided to me by the author for review. This did not affect my review in any way.

4.0 out of 5 stars Short book feels like pages of book were torn out 16 Feb. 2014

Starts out like just another teen book. Kids partying at a outside place just outside of town. But this is the place of an old abandon mine with a history. A wicked storm blows up everyone scatters for their cars but 3 of the kids decide to wait the storm out just inside the mine. Little did they know 2of the other kids are inside and decide to scare them. The storm is raging outside and it begins to run like a river. Kids have to find some place else dryer...........that is all you will get from me! You will have to read the book to find out what happens inside the mine and what it has done to the kids! Defiantly worth the .99 cents. I will once again have to wait for book 2 along with the next book in the series Rae of Hope which btw is an awesome series. W.J. May knows how to tell a story and keeps you looking around the corner for what is happening next!

Fantastic start to a series! I loved the play between the friends and the intensity during the storm when they are caught in a cave. W.J. May makes the characters come to life and I can't wait to find out what happens with their senses in the rest of the series. Love the characters that this author creates. She never fails to entertain.
