You know the CV (Temple, Parallel, Bytes, Spanners, Adverts, Silenced etc, etc....) so I won't drone on. Suffice to say that tBD have expanded upon their fabulous last album from 2005 with an absoutely epic release here...

It's at once Detriot homage, Ambi-Tech smoothness and an intense, sample laden beat-fest but at it's heart it's Intelligent Techno for the noughties... Whatever the trio of Dust, Dust & Downie are doing, it's working. Their collaborations felt a tad undercooked on Silenced but are perfectly roasted here with sky-high production vales, perfect track sequencing (alledgedly a painstaking process on this record) and fabulous pacing.

The addition of short wave and number station samples give it an intense edge which I love, and in fact reminds me of some of Richard H Kirk's finest material (high praise indeed), but it's carried in a different, more open-ended direction. Nothing is hinted at or supposed, it's just there in the ether for you to work out.... Fabulous...

Every track sounds solid, melodic... More purposeful than tBD have sounded for years, since their masterwork 'Spanners' in fact (albeit under a different lineup) and it's this which gives the album such driving force. This is undoubtedly more bleeps n bass as opposed to ambient and the return to a punchier sound comes off perfectly.

Bravo to Ken, Richard & Martin. You've produced one of the best electronica albums of recent years...

An instant classic. Essential...

I've been into the Dog since the first AI releases surfaced. I still marvel at the early works from when the Plaid boys were still on board. For a while there, I thought Ken Downey, Black Dog founder, had lost his music-making mojo. Then came "Silenced" a few years ago, a slow building, sublime slice of deep, dark electronic listening music, far different from the chirpy, bleepy, semi-spastic beat science of old-school B.D. While a fine, solid release, I still wondered if Mr. Downey had more to offer. "Radio Scarecrow" takes off where "Silenced" ended, though it picks up the pace and tempo considerably. The mysterious atmospherics and beautiful ambience is still present, but there is a more steady, dare I say, dancefloor friendly vibe throughout. While tracks are strong on their own, they merge together seamlessly, from start to finish, to create a single, cohesive and thoroughly enjoyable listening experience. With Autechre, B12, and now the Black Dog all delivering some great new material, 2008 looks to be the year of the AI revival. Amen!
