Format: Audio CD
Fanfare Ciocarlia is a Romanian brass gipsy band with around 12 members. They are little known in the UK but do give concerts abroad occasionally. I was actually given this CD as a present and I viewed it suspiciously before playing it. As soon as I pressed play however, I was hooked, as have become a number of my friends. Track one is a short 1 minute intro, but from the moment track 2 begins, I defy anyone to sit completely still while they listen. A combination of screaming clarinets, thumping tuba and blaring horns combine to create a high energy sound that can't fail but to put you in a good mood. The film 'Black Cat White Cat' contains music similar to this. The speed and co-ordination of the instruments is breathtaking, and whilst the playing is slick, the slightly 'off' harmonies give it a distinctly gipsy or east-european sound. They do know how to contrast styles with slow pieces such as track 5, or ones that have a slightly latin feel to them but the real beauty of this album is the sheer unfettered energy with which the band plays, and track 21 'Hora de la Bucharesti' is just perfection - it will have you jumping around every time. I was lucky enough to see them give a concert at the Barbican where eventually they got everyone up out of their seats and I would recommend that if they ever return to the UK that you go see them - but failing that this album , which is the best of the three they have, is a worthy substitute.
