I love the Radio One Live Lounge compilations as you get to hear stuff you would never normally. This is no exception.
My personal highlights of covers from the second volume are:
- Umbrella by Biffy Clyro - much imitated, especially through things like the X Factor, but still a brilliant rendition of the song which I absolutely hate in it's original format.
- 1,000 Miles by Maximo Park was for me, quite stunning. Loosely based on the original, but I really appreciated this cover.
- Stronger by 30 Seconds To Mars is another diamond. Far removed from the original to listen to, but with almost every single element reproduced and taking on another form.
- And my absolute favourite is The Fray doing Hips Don't Lie. This is, for me, one of my favourite tracks ever from Live Lounge. I love the quirkiness and vocals and it's a really fantastic cover which somehow becomes even more Latin in translation.
Interesting interpretation of Hung Up by The Enemy, which I think should work in principle, but it may be lacking a little something.
Also, many other live tracks are well worth a listen, especially Robyn's amazing track which Girls Aloud murder on volume 3, Calvin Harris, Gossip and others.
Unfortunately I hated KT Tunstall's Bloc Party cover - it lost a lot of it's power in translation there, and not being a fan of Amy Winehouse meant hearing her sing Valerie for the millionth time wasn't my favourite track. Not a Dizzee fan, and his live rendition was just too samey and messy for me.
Overall I enjoyed it just as much as the first volume and will continue buying Live Lounge volumes - I just think it's a shame that not ALL the tracks are covers.
