Who would have thought you would have to be such a diplomat to run a radio station

To have to deal with the government bodies who decide what money can go to which station because of the style of music they play.

Get it wrong and you could be off the air

Johnny's story about his days at the BBC and his inevitable rise to take control; of Radio 1 tells it all

He would be a master at the art off politics if he went into that world today after all he has learnt in this area whilst working as Controller of Radio 1

The interference from Government and outside bodies is all set out in this fascinating book about the inside workings of what was such a great radio station.

What has government got to do with the music we want to listen to

Get the answer to these questions that so many of us have asked over the years when it comes to the music we want to listen to

Politics, scandals , personal foibles and likes and dislikes of the DJs we got to love and hate over the years all spill out in this story

If you grew up listening to Radio 1 you will want to read this book about the inner workings of the station we all loved to listen to

It is a book which is guaranteed to fill in the gaps and answer the questions you have been asking yourself all these years

It's also a book about Johnny Beerling himself who gave his all for the sake of bringing us all the greatest music of the day

Shoot the proof-reader 6 April 2009
By Zelig
As with other reviewers, Beerling's own take on his time at Radio 1 is very welcome. Full of essential background, telling anecdotes, and new perspectives on the sheer politics involved.

The real disappointment with this book - and ironic in that it comes from someone so heavily involved in the promotion of style above content - is the appalling editing and proof-reading of Beerling's text. He's clearly an educted and intelligent man, so why is he allowed to be presented as semi-literate? Gramatically, the book is a shambles to the point of being unprofessional, and the publishers should be ashamed of themselves.

If you only ever read one book about Radio One then make sure it's this one, written by Johnny Beerling the man who was there at the very beginning, producing the first ever programme transmitted on the network through to his appointment in 1985 as controller and his departure in 1993.

All this during argubally the stations most popular period from the man who invented the Radio One roadshow, the mammoth 'Beatles Story' documentary and who ran a No 1 radio station.

All the trials and tribulations are all here, a fascinating insight of the station as it was.
Hear how Jimmy Hendrix played in front of one of the large bands that were part of some of the early lunchtime shows to some old ladies knitting on the front row ! What Jimmy made of all this is not recorded !

A brilliant read.

Well done Johnny !
