Product Description

Book Description

From its original settlement along the banks of the River Leen to its recent demolition and redevelopment, the Radford area of Nottingham has always been a colourful working-class district, with a wide range of shops, industries and characters and a rich sense of community.

This fascinating collection of over 200 old photographs and other documents records the history of this vibrant area over the course of the twentieth century. Many of the buildings shown here were once familiar landmarks, but are now long gone, replaced by the extensive developments of the 1980s and '90s. These include such memorable buildings as the Raleigh factory clock, the entrance to the John Player factory and the Barnetts sweet factory, but there are also countless pubs, dwellings and shops which no longer exist but which are fondly remembered.

The author has lived in the area for many years and has developed an extensive collection of photographs depicting the changes of recent decades. The pictures are accompanied throughout by informative captions, compiled from contributions by many local residents and workers.
