Book Description

Book Description
Several years ago Sportsworld Publishing were approached by a systems analyst. He informed us that after a lifetime of systematic betting he was finally in a position to make a comfortable income from horse race betting. He also suggested, perhaps, he could be of some assistance to us.
The product of this fortuitous encounter was the Racing Retirement Plan by Bernard Hibbert. Split into two parts this book first gives an insightful overview on how to approach serious and professional betting. The second part introduces and explains seven winning systems which Bernard himself uses daily.
Throughout the book Bernard shares his many years of experience with the reader. Among other subjects, Bernard explains:
The psychology of betting
Betting banks
Systematic betting
Horse selection
Weight
Handicapping
Going
Draw bias
Paddock watching
Trainer and jockey trends
Statistics.

Why do we bet?
Well, there is no doubt it can be exciting fun, but we all know the real reason is the allure of easy money! Unfortunately we must stop right there and examine some cold hard facts.

The reason most bookmakers flourish is because no more than 10% of punters make a regular profit from the game. The other 90% lose an average of 20p in the pound overall. So, who are these elite 10% and how do they do it?

We have to remember that the bookmaker is a professional. All his time, energy and resources are directed towards his business. Also, we are essentially playing his game because he sets the odds and can manipulate them during play. So how can we possibly win? Well, it is not easy - but not quite as difficult as many people imagine.

Remember that the punter does have one significant advantage - he can be selective. The bookmaker is obliged to bet on every race but we can wait for the right opportunity when things are in our favour. The most important thing is to think like a winner and adopt a professional attitude. We have to be prepared to put in the necessary time and work to reap the rewards.

An orderly and disciplined approach is essential and we will discuss the merits of keeping records, correct staking with an adequate betting bank and so on.

It is only in the last few years that I have discovered a way to make a regular profit from betting on racehorses, but I would never rely on it for a living - much too stressful. Being semi-retired I have a basic income that pays the bills and my betting profits provide the 'jam'. It is advisable not to be greedy. Try to place too many large (winning) bets and you will have difficulty 'getting on', particularly with smaller bookmakers with limited turnovers. (Having said that I have been 'knocked back' by Ladbrokes before now!) Spread your bets around with several different bookmakers, moving on after a good win. You should also explore the opportunities now available on the Betting Exchanges where we can set our own odds and bet directly with other punters.

Remember that all my methods require some personal judgement in their operation. Blindly following rigid rules, with no consideration of other factors, will not do. So, if there is a sudden change in the going conditions that will not suit our system horse, or our selection is badly drawn in a race where a good draw is all-important - NO BET. I Recommend you do a dry run on paper for at least a month before placing bets on any system to gain confidence.

The object of this book is to make you money. It's as simple as that. Therefore, it will contain no waffle and only the occasional trivial anecdote! It will explain how you can make serious money right now. And how you can continue to do so for as long as you wish.

Don't listen to people who tell you that the only winner is the bookmaker. Yes, it's true that the majority of punters lose. But, set about this business in a systematic way and it's so easy to become a winner. And now that betting duty is a thing of the past your income is also tax-free!
Unlike most other books on this subject I will tell you exactly how to set up your betting strategy and give you methods that all have at least three years checkable results, proving to you that these systems really work.

I have read just about every publication on horseracing and I can tell you that this book is unique. It will unlock the secrets of systematically increasing your wealth clearly and concisely. No theories or ambiguity, just cold hard facts that cannot be disputed.

Now, before we start, tell me, having read this introduction, aren't you glad that you bought this book?

Right, let's make a start and see if we can't join the 10% club!

Great Racing Book 15 May 2011
Format:Paperback
Unsure what the previous reviewer means when says the book is about a staking system. The book starts with a few words about the mental approach necessary to succeed in this game and then goes on to describe the best way to organise your betting bank and what level to stake at, it also has some very useful statistics on what kind of losing runs to prepare for depending on the strike rate of your selections. The rest of the first half of the book then goes on to tell you some of the most crucial factors to take into account when looking to pick a winning racehorse. This advice is invaluable and the information given with a bit of thought you would be able to formulate your own systems from the advice given. The thing I like about this is that the information is presented in a very concise and clear fashion. There can be a tendency in racing to get bogged down in lots and lots of detail which doesn't always help. Other very good stuff to note is that unlike many older publications or those who ignore the subject this book addresses the opportunities available in the All Weather code of Flat racing. Another useful chapter on paddock watching which I will certainly use if going to the course and excellent introduction for a beginner. The rest of the book or the second part contains complete racing systems. I have not tried any of them as yet so cannot verify their profitably but they seem based on logic, they don't overburden the betting man as they very quick to check and would produce a couple of bets a day running all the systems. There is two for the flat, one for the jumps, one for the All Weather and a jockey system and one based on the vagaries of a draw at the racecourse, it would be advisable to check the validity of the last two in terms of whether these statistics have changed over the years but the other systems represented are timeless and can be operated on current racing. Overall an excellent little book and the beginner who reads nothing else would be ahead of the game by reading little more than what is contained in the pages of this book.

Great Read 19 Jan 2012
Format:Paperback
I've been backing horses for nearly 40 years and I've read a lot of books on the subject and `The Racing Retirement Plan' is up there with the best.
It has some excellent tips for novice and experienced punters alike. There is a wealth of useful statistics some a little dated, with some great pointers how to build racing systems and some ready made easy to follow profitable systems for you to try, with a wealth of research to back them up. Some of the material you can find in other books of a similar nature but there is enough new material to make this an excellent and worthwhile read.

Very interesting 23 Feb 2009
Format:Paperback
This is a book about a staking plan, it will not on the whole help you win money without a decent selection criteria. Its is detailed and from the information given I was able to write a spread sheet to automate the staking system.

A good refrence book and one that I reread every so often
