If you have the Hyperion recording, by the Corydon Singers, under Matthew Best, you may not need this recording (but read on). The Hyperion recording was fabulous and proved that a recording of this luminous masterpiece did not necessarily require a Russian, Ukrainian, or Bulgarian choir to do it justice. I feel that the quality of this recording goes even further. In all registers, the choir is unbelievably good and is matched by the quality of the recording, always superb with Signum. I never thought that the Corydon Singers could be outdone, but I sincerely think that they may have been. If you buy the Hyperion recording, you will be getting a sublime performance of what may be the supreme masterpiece of twentieth-century music. This recording gives you whatever comes on top of sublime. Ocasionally, tempi are hurried somewhat, which could get irritating with repeated listenings. Overall, Best judges the tempi, well, best. Even so, if only marginally, I think that this is now the recording of this work to recommend. I can't imagine that anyone buying either this version or the Hyperion one could be disappointed. They are both magnificent.

To most of the listening public, it may seem that all of the great liturgical works of music are tied to the Catholic churches of Europe. It is too easy to forget that there was and is an equally great faith in the Orthodox church. Many great Slavic composers have written for that church also; including Tchaikowsky, and of course Rachmaninov. In this equisite music; allied with the outstanding singing of Tenebrae [in particular those wonderful basses]we are treated to a veritable feast. This has gone firmly to the top rankings of my collection

I use this music with the Spiritual Formation group I lead. We often listen to it at the beginning of our time together when we are stilling our spirits and focusing on the Lord. It is peaceful and warm music.
