5 of 5 people found the following review helpful By I. Giles TOP 50 REVIEWER on 29 Nov 2012
Format: Audio CD
This is a compilation of the two single issues whose earlier reviews are reproduced as follows as there is no reason to adjust them:

Concertos 1 and 2

This disc has the distinction of having one of the most important hallmarks of a truly great performance. That is that for the duration of the performance it seems as if this can be the only way to play the piece.

That reaction, of course, is complete nonsense when considered in the cool light of day. In this case how can it be possible to eliminate such luminaries of the repertoire as Ashkenazy, van Cliburn, Lugansky, Pletnev and Richter to name but just a few in strictly alphabetical order? Indeed, all of those performers are also able to give the illusion of being the only way and to that end the name of Andsnes must be added to the list of the elite.

In this case he has the undoubted advantage of the tonal resources of the BPO under the ever-watchful eye of Pappano, a conductor of considerable experience and depth of musical understanding. The second concerto is a 'live' performance and this extra frisson generated is apparent over the fine studio performance of the first concerto. It is a very strong coupling indeed.

EMI have provided a high quality recording and the whole disc is a very fine achievement and needs to be considered along with the very best. As such it should give most purchasers considerable lasting satisfaction.

Concertos 3 and 4

As the heading to this review states, this is Andsnes' favourite concerto recording to date and, having bought several of his recordings all of which are very fine, I would be inclined to agree. Certainly it, and the whole series now achieved, must rank alongside the finest available.

I have loved the Rachmaninov Piano Concertos for many years and this version is a welcome addition to my Kindle music cloud.
Not having an educated ear, I could not say whether this is a superior rendition or merely an adequate one and could not comment
intelligently on its merits compared to all the other versions available. However, I do think that the sound reproduction quality is very
good and I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this interpretation and is in my opinion an excellent product and good value at the price.

The piano sounds really clear and crystal like. It makes me feel inside the piano and not just a bland surface veneer effect. Andsnes plays with power and sparkle and the orchestra seems completely at one with him. The tempo for me is just right, as I've heard some versions played ridiculously fast. Super value mp3.

I heard the second piano concerto played during a proms concert and was so moved I decided I have to have it and more. Of course the second piano concerto was the background music for the famous film 'Brief Encounter' so it's probably the most famous concerto. I don't know if its well played as I'm no expert but I loved it. Worth every penny.
