The sole aim of the previous reviewer appears to be to assert that a previous vinyl recording of these works is superior in sound quality. That opens up a debate about the quality of digital sound and the benefits/losses of the CD over the LP, which I don't see the point of getting into. Choose your medium by all means but for most people it isn't helpful to review a CD against an LP.

As a collector of recorded music, particularly that of Rachmaninoff, for over 40 years, I'd just say that the coupling of Rachmaninoff's favourite work, The Bells, with his last work, Symphonic Dances, works well for me. The BMG re-issue of Kondrashin's versions of these two pieces remains a favourite, despite the poor quality of the sound (far poorer than I recall it being on the old HMV/Melodiya LPs and I don't for a moment think that is because of the medium itself, by the way).

Arguably it takes a Russian orchestra as well as conductor and soloists to get the best from the choral symphony but to my ears Bychkov's forces do well. They do equally well in the Symphonic Dances and the recorded sound quality (played on a normal CD player) is fine for me.

If the coupling appeals, don't hesitate.

Tame version 8 Mar 2010
Format:Audio CD
This does not have anything like the dynamics of a previously bought vinyl version of this music. If you want dramatics, this is far too tame. Could be just an ordinary CD, not an SACD.

Note to fellow saxophonists: 15 Jan 2012
By Angel Saxo - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
The great Daniel Gauthier is the saxophone soloist on this recording of Rachmaninoff's Symphonic Dances. Saxophonists looking to study this excerpt should pick up this recording as well as Zinman/Baltimore.
