As soon as I heard about this recording, I thought that I must get a copy. I was not disappointed. I listened to the Stereo tracks (1-13) on 9 April 2010 through my stereo system. Both the playing and the recorded sound were very impressive. On the basis of this single audition, I recommend this recording to anyone but to fans of Rachmaninoff and piano music, this is absolutely essential.
I have not compared this re-performance CD directly with CD issues transferred from either 78s or from Ampico piano recordings. In particular, I have not compared this new CD to the famous "A Window in Time" recording made on a Boesendorfer 290SE Reproducing Piano which seems to be the most obvious competitor to this Zenph CD. Therefore, although very enthusiastic, I am a little cautious about praising this new CD too highly.
Also, I have not yet listened to the Binaural Stereo tracks (14-26) through headphones which promises to be an even more vivid experience. I did listen to the first Binaural track (14) of the Kreisler/Rachmaninoff Liebesleid through my loudspeakers and it also sounded stunning.
Nevertheless, on the basis of my incomplete audition so far, I recommend the Zenph CD very highly to all lovers of Rachmaninoff's music and of great pianism.
