Format:Audio CD
At the time only 21 years of age , Evgeny Kissin set a new standard for modern piano playing. It is reputed that when Sergei Racmaninov himself heard Horowitz play this piece he was simply gasping with amazement......well. I darent dream what he would have done had he heard this rendition which , to my mind , is the most startling live performance ever and certainly the best recording of the piece. His technique is embarrassingly faultless throughout this concerto and if we knew didnt know better , we would not believe that this piece is considered (perhaps along with Prokofiev) to be the hardest piece written for piano. The final movement climax has the potential to bring tingles to the spine ( it is , indeed , worth buying for that reason alone ) and is met with the hugest cry (with applause as well) that I have ever heard after a live performance ( and , yes , I do go to the Proms quite often)
Finally the customary "Kissin" encores demonstrate the sheer and immense stamina which Kissin posesses....the vocalise is hypnotic.....

This is a phenomenal recording of this immensely popular concerto. It has been played to the point of exhaustion with every virtuoso using it to showcase their skills, which makes it extremely difficult to say something new.
Kissin definitely grabs your attention from the first theme, taken at a slower tempo than usual, however, unlike some other artists he manages to keep your attention all the way through. He creates such immense drama and scale (this concerto has never sounded so huge as it did in this recording). The final moments of the concerto are nothing short of breathtaking and the deafening applause thereafter is token to that fact.
If there is one gripe I have with this recording it is that the piano seems to overpower the orchestra a lot. There were times when the orchestra should be carrying the piano with a huge fortissimo sound and they seem to be locked in the back room, this is especially prevalent in the first movement. Then somehow in the third movement the orchestra seem to be exactly were they need to be and the sound is fantastic. I'm not sure if Ozawa was deliberately keeping the BSO at bay so as to let the piano take center stage but in a huge romantic concerto the orchestra needs more bravura.

This CD is one of my prized possessions. It is a quite extraordinary performance combining almost superhuman technical brilliance with profound emotional and interpretative depth. Not only does Kissin include several ossia (cadenzas) apparently never previously attempted, but Seiji Ozawa uses a copy of the score from the Boston Symphony Orchestra archives annotated by one of his forebears, who performed the piece with Rachmaninov himself. Add to this the performance in front of a live audience, and the result is truly electrifying. Buy this CD.
