More About the Author

I think that each of us is unique and yet we are the distillation of everything that has come before. So it is with writing also, and mine owes as much to Aristophanes as it does to J. A. Jance; to Aesop as much as to Ray Bradbury; to the Grimm Brothers as to John D. MacDonald; to Shakespeare as to Raymond Chandler; to the nameless bards who sang of Cú Chulainn and Conaire Mor and the nameless scribes who later wrote down their words as to Homer who gave us Achilles and Odysseus, and Edmond Rostand and Miguel de Cervantes who immortalized Cyrano and Don Quixote, and Fritz Leiber who gave us Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser.

Andre Norton, Anne McCaffrey, Fredric Brown, Phillip José Farmer, Ian Fleming, Zane Grey, J. R. R. Tolkien, A. A. Milne, James Thurber, Mark Twain, Robert W. Service, John Steinbeck, Hemingway, Ayn Rand, Solzhenitsyn, Checkov, Pasternak, John Donne, Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, Sappho, Ben Hecht, Emil Petaja, Edwin Arlington Robinson, Beatrix Potter, Ogden Nash, Heinlein, Clarke, Azimov, Ellison, Silverberg, Dick, Simak, Vonnegut, Verne, Dumas, Hugo, Chesterton, Conan Doyle, Thomas Jefferson, Tom Paine, Alice Walker, Elmore Leonard, the list goes on and on ad infinitum.

Every author, whether I've read his or her works or not, whether I liked his or her works or not; every writer, scribe who ever typed, penned, incised a word, a line, are as much a part of me, my DNA, as the Conarys, Dames, Longs, Fullers, Cousins, Chilton on back to that first amoeba that tweaked to life in the long forgotten primordial ooze.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty darn skippy. 23 Sep 2010
Format:Kindle Edition
Ok, 1 warning before you even purchase this book. It can get a bit kinky in places and may not be suitable for the more clean of mind.

Now, without giving most of the plot away: A cracker of a book with a strong lesbian lead that doesn't fall prey to the usual stereotypes. The plot is suspenseful and cleverly written however it felt like the first 3 quarters could have been cut a bit shorter so the last quarter wasn't so rushed.

However, for the price this book is definitely worth a read for the price. I've already ordered the sequel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Page turner!!! 3 Nov 2010
By JAK
Format:Paperback
I like Rachel Cord. No other way to put it. She's compelling and I still remember how life cruelly treated her. I had to know how it affected her. Wow. Not what I expected.

The first book was very good. I like this one even better.

'Couldn't put it down' and 'Page turner' may be clichés, but they aptly describe these books. I would add heart-rending, upsetting, yet sweet and funny too.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Lady PI who wants to Downsize to a C-Cup 30 Jun 2010
By Lloyd Lofthouse - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
First, a word about the rating system I use, which I have borrowed from Alice Wakefield.
I strive to keep the ratings meaningful and use five-stars sparingly.

* 5 stars are reserved for works that reach the level of a Steinbeck, Mark Twain, etc.
* 4 stars from me very high praise, meaning outstanding & highly recommended.
* 3 stars means I enjoyed the book and recommend it, with some reservations.
___________________________

Rachel Cord is a private detective, who wants to save enough money to have a breast reduction from double H to a C-cup or at least a B. She is also a lesbian who picks up beautiful women easier than cutting ice cream with a red-hot knife. Most men would envy how fortunate Cord is. I did.

When Cord is handed a missing person's case, she cannot turn it down since she needs the money to make her house payment. However, there are plenty of challenges. Rachel has a PI license to practice in Philadelphia, PA, but not across the river in New Jersey. She also has beautiful lovers on both sides of the river, and she's in danger of losing Wendy when her kinky tryst with Danny (the missing man's sister) is discovered.

Cord's problems get worse when most of the clues turn up in New Jersey, and there's a New Jersey cop who hates her and wants to throw her in jail. If she doesn't have enough challenges working on the wrong side of the river, the Philadelphia police want to know where Cord's former lover Karen is hiding. It seems that Karen is a serial killer who has been leaving a trail of dead bodies across the country, and she may be back in town.

Although I ran into a "few" missing commas and a typo or two, I read Conary's book in three days. I do not read books that fast unless the story hooks me. In fact, my favorite mystery authors are James Lee Burke, Dick Frances and Tony Hillerman. Conary brews a plot to compete with these three.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprise Ending in Spades 5 Jun 2010
By Reads Thrillers - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This sequel is Conary's second book and he continues to amaze me with his exceptional writing skills that paints a colorful story. No one can accuse him of using cardboard characters as there is an abundant of realistic details that make his characters come to life with dialog that is real.

The suspense builds and then has an ending that is, dramatic, totally unexpected, and has you on the edge of your seat. You wish you were there to help poor Rachel, who was in danger of losing another love.

Rachel is a well-endowed tough PI that takes no quarters from anyone, male or female regardless of their persuasion. She does have one kink in her armor; She thinks she is the Lone Ranger and doesn't realize that Tonto is not there.

This is a well-crafted plot and if you have a sharp detective mind you may pick up a clue here or there. Maybe not! Recommended reading for those, who want to be entertained with a suspenseful mystery.
