Book Description

12 Sep 2013
Think Marie Antoinette in jeans and a cowboy hat - that is Rachel Ashwell's prairie style. Rachel Ashwell Couture Prairie takes her signature pastels, ruffles and whimsical prettiness right to the heart of cowboy country. This is a journey in pictures and words, following Rachel through the fields of a little town called Round Top, home to one of the largest, most eclectic and vibrant antiques and flea markets in the world, and then back to Rachel's newly acquired bed-and-breakfast in Texas. Here Rachel's inspired finds, her creative imagination, eye for detail and her commitment to beauty, comfort and function have finally come together in one location: The Prairie by Rachel Ashwell - an irresistible destination. This book takes Rachel in a new direction, bringing her eye for cherished patinas and pastel prettiness into the endless landscapes and diverse architectural styles of Texas. Here you will see how her style adapts to corrugated metal sheeting and weathered timbers and how it brings new life to elegant period mansions. Chapter by chapter, the book leads you through Rachel's little houses on the prairie, from the Ranger's Lounge where hearty breakfasts are served, to the Pearl Barn, scene of wedding parties and celebrations, stopping off at the evocatively named guest accommodation: Blue Bonnet Barn, Cornflower Cottage, Meadow Manor, Faith Cottage and Liliput Lodge.

More About the Author

Rachel Ashwell is a self-made businesswoman who founded the iconic brand known as Shabby Chic in 1989 when she opened a small shop in Santa Monica, California where she sold "pretty things" without spending much time or distance away from
her young children.

Her vision and love of vintage style and fleamarket finds have hit a chord with her customers who have found her comfortable, relaxed approach to design both reassuring and achievable. She has educated and inspired people through a series of books--Shabby Chic, The Shabby Chic Home, Rachel Ashwell's Shabby Chic Guide to Treasure Hunting and Decorating, and Shabby Chic: Sumptuous Settings--and through her television series "Rachel Ashwell's Shabby Chic On Style" (some episodes available on DVD).

Rachel Ashwell: Shabby Chic Interiors was published in 2009 by CICO Books to celebrate twenty years of Shabby Chic. This was followed in 2011 by Rachel Ashwell: Shabby Chic Inspirations and Beautiful Spaces. There are now Rachel Ashwell Shabby Chic Couture stores in Los Angeles, New York, Texas, and London.

In 2011 Rachel opened "The Prairie by Rachel Ashwell"--a bed and breakfast in Texas. Rachel Ashwell Couture Prairie and Flea Market Treasures, published by CICO Books, is her most recent book.

I have given this book 4 stars. Firstly, the book is easy to follow, well put together in a shabby chic way. I so, so loved
the little imperfections, this is what gives Rachel Ashwell's books that special little something.

3.0 out of 5 stars DISAPPOINTING 27 Oct 2014
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Was quite disappointed in this book which I bought for a friend who is a fan of this type of décor. I found it lacking in originality (books my friend already owns already featured many of the ideas contained in this one), so I returned it and bought something more original which I hope she'll like.
