I was so looking forward to this book, but sadly it did not deliver on expectations.

The main problem is that it leaves out so much information which could have made the story much more interesting. Instead we are spoon fed pages upon pages about how 'great' some of his colleagues were to work with (yawn).

It doesnt go into enough detail on any of the technical aspects, and really does read like an extension to the author's CV .. does he think that prospective employers are going to read this and think wow.. this guy works so hard.

There is a half decent epilogue at the end, covering whether or not the projects were deemed a success, but once again.. its a half done job. No mention of any of the 360's H/W problems. No mention of the fact that industry leading tech reviewers slated the 360's xenon and PS3's cell processors upon launch. Barely any mention of the nintendo wii and its IBM based Power PC chip at all. The apple component to the story is just glossed over.

So frustrating. No technical detail whatsoever.. Analogies used constantly (some good, some dire) to explain anything technical. No diagrams at all.

The book could easily be condensed to this :

-IBM starts designing the new PS3 cell processor. Innovative Design.
-MS approaches IBM and asks for a new 360 processor.
-IBM does the dirty on Sony/Toshiba and takes the core of the PS3's cell processor and build's Microsoft's 360 Xenon processor with it.
-IBM lies, cheats and manipulates Sony/Toshiba
-IBM also shafts Apple too.
-Many project meetings, hard schedules, slippages, team rows and team parties.
-IBM eventually ships the products, and no doubt make $$millions$$

End of Story. Lesson to be learned... never trust an IBM guy.

This book is a missed opportunity. The author has an ego problem. Lord knows what his colleagues must now think of him. He also repeats himself... a lot.

And the way he talks about games and how people play them will make you laugh (or cry) at how little he knows. E.g. He describes Halo3 as having lifelike realistic graphics. Eh ???

However, all in all... as he is the only one telling this story.. its still probably worth a buy. Just prepare to be disappointed and left wanting much more.
