Amazon.co.uk Review

As the all-new racing experience from Codemasters Studios, creators of Colin McRae: DiRT™, Race Driver: GRID is all about the race. Every moment from the adrenalin rush at the start lights to the elation at the chequered flag – the tension, pressure, noise, and action.

Featuring only the most powerful race cars – current and classic, circuit and drift – players will compete to conquer the most prestigious official race tracks and championships and then go beyond to compete in challenging city-based competitions, through to road events and urban street races.

With races crammed with action and incident, high-impact moments will come at you thick and fast, one right after another: engine blows, tyre blow outs, tight overtaking, accidents, opponent cars flipping, spinning, collisions with other cars and trackside objects.

From humble beginnings, earning a few thousand dollars a season, build a feared and respected racing team with a multi-million dollar income and complete at dramatic race locations and dominate a multi-disciplined world of racing.

In Europe, race prestige Marques, including Aston Martin, Koenigsegg and Pagani, on the greatest official race circuits. Enter street competitions and race high-performance V8 muscle cars through iconic U.S. cities including San Francisco, Washington DC and Detroit. In the Far East, Japanese racing culture sets the tone where night races, including Drift racing, take drivers through neon illuminated cities and to outlying mountain roads.

As the antithesis of the box-ticking, plodding single-player race game, Race Driver: GRID delivers a diverse career mode in a persistent world of racing that provides each player with a unique experience as their team writes itself into racing folklore.

Product Description

Its all about the race says Codemasters about Race Driver GRID, its big summer blockbuster, out on 360, PS3, PC and DS. From the same team that brought you 2007s highly regarded Colin McRae DIRT, GRID aims to capture every moment from the adrenalin rush at the start lights to the elation at the chequered flag - the tension, pressure, noise and action. This stunning looking title focuses on only the most powerful race cars, both past and present, and covering both circuit and drift. Players will get to compete in a contrasting selection of events, from official race tracks and championships, before going on to take part in intense city-based competitions, road events and even urban street racing. Like the three TOCA Race Driver titles before it, variety is high on the agenda, making the game feel like several top-class racing games in one. Focusing on Europe, the U.S. and the Far East, there are familiar cars and tracks to suit every petrol-head fetish imaginable. In Europe, for example, players can compete on the best-loved official tracks in prestige Marques including Aston Martin, Koenigsegg and Pagani. Elsewhere, in the U.S. gamers can race around San Francisco, Washington D.C and Detroit in street racing events that feature V8 Muscle Cars, while the Far East plays host to night races in neon-drenched cities and mountain roads, through back streets and the industrial areas of Yokohama on the fringes of legality. Meanwhile the specifically tailored DS version not only promises stunning visuals, but the most complete pick-up-and-play pocket racing package. As well as boasting extensive multiplayer options that let players compete in four-player online races, the DS version also features an evolution of the exclusive track editor first seen in Race Driver Create and Race last year. With over 60 pieces to choose from, gamers have near-limitless options to design a track of their choice. But whichever format gamers go for, Race Driver GRID sets a new high water mark f

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazingly Good 21 Jan 2009

Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I have to say I'm gobsmacked by some of the negative reviews this game has received. I'm using a Logitech gamepad that was easy to configure in the options menu and has given me hours of racing enjoyment. Handling seems to be the biggest gripe for most people but for me its a positive part of the game as you cant expect to take a corner at 300 mph like arcade racing games and then overtake 10 cars in the straight. The game makers have tried to create a fun but semi-realistic racing game that you can pick up and play but also hone your skills and improve as time goes on. The graphics are out of this world (helped by my new pc set up, quad core and 9600 GT graphics card) and the career options make this hard to put down after just a couple of hours of playing. If you have a little patience and give this game a chance it will be one of the best games you have ever played!

5.0 out of 5 stars Most stunning racer there is!! 9 Aug 2009

Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Simply put, Race Driver: GRID is the most visually stunning game I've ever seen.
Let me say it again, from the incredibly detailed cars and crashes, to realistic damage modelling, even the crowds who are taken aback when you crash near them, the amount of graphic effects in this game are breathtaking.

The only downside to that is however, in a hefty system requirement:
If you don't have at least 256MB of dedicated video memory, you're not going to enjoy the game.
Be warned!

I'd like to start off by saying, this is NOT a driving simulator...so its not right to compare this with Forza-Motorsport or TOCA and say its not realistic enough.

Quite frankly I'm starting to get tired of the bad reviews people write just because they were disappointed in the simulation.
Hear this: This is an ARCADE game; not a sim.

Having said that, this game is does offer quite an action-packed experience:
There's a huge variety of races - although broadly catagorized into US, Europe and Japan regions (each with its own style) there is a staggeringly large amount of race types: Street races, GP style track racing, open wheel (formula style) racing, Drifting, speed challenges...goes on and on.

Each race and car type has a distinct feel to it; and it feels good if you're really into racing...and yet enjoyable enough for the casual gamer.

The AI is also very good - in that it acts like a real driver. They don't simply drive in perfect formations without making any mistakes; they don't mindlessly bang into you if you're spun out on the track, AI is very realistic.

The bottom line is this:

If you're a hardcore sim fan, you might not enjoy the cars-only upgrade mode of this game: Get TOCA or something.

5.0 out of 5 stars Graphics are sweet and the gameplay is nice 1 Jun 2008
Platform for Display:PC
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Been playing the demo for like 2 hours and felt the urge to buy this game.

When I got the game, I tried out playing with cars on higher leagues such as the le mans vehicles and it totally put me off the game. But when I started from the lower leagues, it brings you back into the game and it makes so addictive. I really love the game style on how you wish to setup your career with assisted stopping, level changer and such functionalities.

The graphics of the game is really gorgeous. Currently running on this rig with no slow down at all:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 6400+ 3.2GHz
GIGABYTE 570-SLi Chipset Motherboard
NVIDIA 9600GT 1024MB (2x512MB) SLi Config OC'd
4GB GeIL Black Dragon Ultimate Gaming RAM
320GB Samsung Spinpoint T

The game does not even break a sweat since going SLi. Before on one card I felt lag when burning dohnuts but I get no lag at all.

The game is really one of the top draws for racer games and worthwhile playing @ LAN or online.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely breathtaking..... 3 Sep 2010
Platform for Display:PC
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Well, to say that this game is over 2 years old now, it seems like only yesterday all the hype started upon it's pre-release. I can't feel any sympathy for those who only gave this game 1 and 2 stars, as they either, didn't have the necessary computer specs, or, didn't bother to read the description and manual, and I don't think I've played the same game as some of them.
I haven't bothered to go on-line as I quite enjoy pottering about on my own, even using keyboard buttons, and a lot of practice makes perfect, cars drifting around corners, 190 mph down straights, and, I took a few screenshots at the same time.....LOL
Read the game description above as it summarises very well what to expect, however, I can categorically state that the developers have outdone themselves with the street racing scenarios. Having personally been to Milan, Detroit, Long Beach, Washington, Spa, Nurburgring, Donnington Park, etc, the buildings and local scenery are instantly recognisable. The graphics are mind blowing, Tokyo at night with all the neon lights glowing on a wet road in all their glory is a sight to behold and you forget to drive in the race for a time.
Lots of subtle effects, both, visual and soundwise, have been littered on every layout, flashbulbs popping from the spectators, show up really well on the Le Mans 24 hour race circuit, engines humming when in tunnels, etc, and with the plethora of eye candy around, it makes you feel as though you are actually at these venues. The cars are superbly designed with lots of different skins for each race, and with the many bumps and scrapes along the way it gets a bit hairy at times trying to keep up with everybody.
