I'm building three ' Locost ' sports cars, a Lotus Seven derived design by Ron Champion. (get his book here!) I wanted my project to pass engineering first time, and to be the best, safest car I could build. So I started by building a library of good books. This is a real goodie! While he discusses many types of chassis designs, including American 'muscle-cars', F1s & dragsters, the authors treatment is universal and applicable to high- performance lightweights too. He addresses the principles influencing chassis development first in a historical context, through advances in materials and building methods describing how more power pushed the designers to the level of sophistication we see in contemporary racing and sports machines. He also shows examples of bad engineering practises that can be avoided by proper planning. If, like me, you want to modify a perfectly good design to make it uniquely 'yours', then Forbes Airds' book will provide stimulating and creative reading. I highly recommend it. One of my most referred to books.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Buy 3 Jun 2000
Format:Paperback
A very good book that takes the time to explain concepts clearly. Many kinds of chassis construction are discussed and these discussions are backed up with clear illustrations and black-and-white phtographs.

If you're looking for an introduction to chassis design in language you can understand, then buy this book. It represents very good value for money.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ammatuer View 6 Jan 2003
Format:Paperback
Takes the amatuer or enthusiast through the history of chassis and suspension design, illustrating the problems and advantages of each step. A good read for the curious who wish to understand the basics without the math that may be nessesary for application of the pricipals desribed.

A breath of fresh air. If you want to know how to build a tubular chassis then this is the book to read. Lots of theory, lots of pics of how others have made theirs, with explanations of why. I love it!
