Book Description

30 Oct 2008 Katie
'Fair fa yer honest sonsie face Great chieftain o the pudding race!'To mark the 250th anniversary of the birth of Robert Burns, Scotland's National Bard, Itchy Coo is proud to publish this lift-the-flap board book in the format of the hugely successful KATIE series. There will be many publications in 2009 to mark Burns' 250th birthday, but Rabbie's Rhymes is unique in bringing the best-loved lines of the poet to the very youngest readers. Children will love lifting the flaps to find out: where the wee sleekit cowerin timorous moose is hiding; what the haggis is wearing on his head; and what happens to the Highlander's kilt when the wind blows. A simple, funny, colourful introduction to Burns, Rabbie's Rhymes will entertain the bairns and encourage parents and teachers not only to recite the lines from the poems but perhaps also to sing the tunes to songs like Ca the Yowes and Ye Banks and Braes, A Red, Red Rose and, as a grand finale, Auld Lang Syne. Illustrated by award-winning Karen Sutherland, Rabbie's Rhymes will be one of the highlights of the 2009 Burns celebrations.

4.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Burns Night and/or St Andrews Day 11 Mar 2009
Format:Board book|Verified Purchase
I purchased this book for use in a nursery school to celebrate Burns Night, and particularly Homecoming 2009. The children were very engaged with the illustrations and were quite taken with particularly "To A Moose".

I felt a little disappointed that the complete first verse of the rhyme was not on the page; it was only really the first 2 lines, which was a shame, when you want to teach children the beginnings of Burns work. This wasnt a major issue, as I was able to find the rest online.

I would highly recommend this book for children aged 3 upwards. The illustrations are nice and simple to engage a young child, and the lift the flap parts provide interest and stimulate curiosity.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not what the Baird would have wanted! 2 Jun 2009
Format:Board book
A very disappointing book! I was expecting a little bit more than one line from each poem.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent wee book for wee folk. 21 Nov 2011
By NellieB
Format:Board book
Rabbie's Rhymes introduces children to the wonderful verses of Robert Burns. It is my 18 month old Granddaughter's favourite book, she enjoys lifting the flaps, especially Charlie's kilt (fortunately something is worn below). As stated in other reviews only the first few lines of each verse is printed on the pages but this is not a reason to dismiss this book, the verses are so well known that you should be able to elaborate yourself if you wish to. The important point is that you are reading and singing Burns to weans. Whilst my wee one would happily enjoy this book alone I always sit with her to ensure the flaps don't get torn, I have had to reinforce the kilt with a bit of sticky tape due to her enthusiasm. The illustrations have a lovely traditional Scottish look ie Rabbie tucked up in bed with a stone hot water bottle and his heavy socks on. In my opinion this book is well worth the few pounds it costs.
