The Microlight jacket is one of those jackets that gives so much warmth for it's weight. You will hardly notice that you have it on it terms of weight, but it will keep you warm even with just a base layer, or lightweight fleece underneath it. The jacket has quite narrow baffles because it is a lightweight jacket so the down is kept evenly spread throughout the piece, ensuring even warmth. It is so versatile, that I find myself packing it into the stuffsack, and taking it with me wherever I go. Top bit of kit

I am a big fan of Rab jackets, they seem cut very well for the slimmer figure, normally my tall, skinny frame is swamped in jackets but Rab seem to have nailed it.

The Alpine is a kick ass jacket for the typical British winter. The shell is made from Pertex Microlight which is a ripstop type material that is light and very strong for its light weight. I use this jacket when out rock climbing and it has been abused more than I care to think but it still looks like new.

The filling is 750 fill down which has a hydrophobic coating to make it less prone to becoming water logged, a total plus as the fatal issue with down is that if it gets wet it loses its insulation.

The hood is a welcome addition too, it fits well, has an elastic drawstring system and has a wire peak.

There is an elastic waistcord, which is great, the previous model did not have this which allowed wind to enter.

Finally, this jacket folds into the chest pocket to become a small and very portable package.

I have the jacket in tempest blue, it looks really smart, is really warm for its weight and is brilliantly designed.

Pricey but you get a garment of superior quality.
