Product Description

Product Description

The 2nd revised edition tells the inside story of the 13000 men and women of the RUC, many of whom have paid with their lives, or been maimed in the course of duty. Ryder traces the origins of this unique force from the partition of Ireland in the 1920s, to the turmoil of the Troubles and the challenges set down by the Patten Report.

5.0 out of 5 stars A True account of the force and the History of Ireland, 9 Feb 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The RUC 1922-2000: A Force Under Fire (Paperback)
This book is going to be viewed, depending on your opinion of the situation in Northern Ireland. This would be a mistake, This not only a history of the force but that of Ireland. It starts from the force in the whole of ireland thru the setting up of the state of N.I. and the changes of the police to those events. It gives the inside views of the people involved. It pulls no punches and makes admissions not widely heard. Reading this book will give a better insight into the problems of northern ireland and the difficulties of the police, as a target for all sides. I found impossible to put down and have a high respect for the people who have the guts and courage to wear the uniform. Unlike other police forces, once they take that choice, their lives and those around them are changed forever and there is no turning back.

5.0 out of 5 stars How it was., 5 Jun 2004
By "fox6651" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The RUC: A Force Under Fire (Hardcover)
A realistic non bias look into the RUC that helps us understand what these brave men and women had to suffer in the name of peace.
Often the meat in the sandwich but always there. A recomended read for anybody who wants to know what it felt like, and what it took to be part of one of the bravest police forces in the world. No wonder the force was recognised by the "George Cross Medal for bravery"
