Mike was born in the UK in 1965 and studied English at Manchester University. He worked for many years in first teaching and then publishing before deciding to chance it as a freelance writer. Nearly eight of these years were spent in southern Africa, notably Zimbabwe and Swaziland, which nurtured a love for this part of the world that now colours much of his writing. Though no serious scientist, Mike's passion for natural history has always led him to grub around in search of wild things - whether in the African bush or on an English beach - and inspires him to communicate this to others through his writing. He also enjoys drawing and photographing the natural world, and has contributed many images to both his own work and other people's.

Mike now lives in Brighton, UK, with his wife and young daughter. He keeps his African hand in as editor of Travel Zambia magazine, and nips off to other exciting places whenever people are prepared to send him there.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fab 25 Jun. 2010
Format:Hardcover
I brought this book because my son kept asking me 'what is it?', and just saying bug would not please him, we both have had a good look through the book, now if he sees a bug in the garden he will look for the picture in the book then show me what he has seen, not bad for a 2.5year old!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully presented and fun 14 Nov. 2010
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I bought this for my 5 year old son and he loves it. He has asked many times for us to read it together at bedtime! Bugs never need to be something your child fears or feels disgust for when you have a book that celebrates and explains them so well with such gorgous illustrations.
I'm not exactly a fan of bugs and insects, but even I am looking forward to the spring and summer when we can take the book into the garden and try to spot some of these amazing creatures. Very educational and inspiring, it is clearly laid out and easy to follow, and a book that your child can learn to read for themselves.

5.0 out of 5 stars perfect starter book 4 Oct. 2010
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
A lovely book for young ones. Well worth the money, easy to read and encourages interaction. I bought it for a 5th birthday present and it's already been borrowed by a little sister. We're hoping to use it when the weather improves meanwhile it makes for a good read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Garden Bugs basics 28 Jun. 2011
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This book was not entirely as expected as it is more of a 'story' book rather than identification. Nonetheless, it was well received by 3 and 5 year old grand daughters. I am still looking for an age appropriate Bug ID book!

A nice little book for junior naturalists. Just enough information to get them interested and maybe wanting more as they grow older. Glad I bought it for my little boy.
