Somehow I missed this series when it was on BBC, possibly because I work weekends, although I am surprised that if I saw the trailers I didn't bother to record it. But - as I rate Richard Armitage as one of the best of todays actors, I saw this set on Amazon and decided to go for it. This is a Dutch release, which means only that the writing on the cover is unreadable - the DVDs are the BBC ones with Dutch subtitles, easily removed - and this set works out so much cheaper than buying the English version.
I laughed so much, the humour is great and the writing and acting are both excellent. There are loads of ludicrous little bits which come across so well when you consider it supposedly happened nearly a thousand years ago! I was waiting in each series for the stories to become a bit passe, but it didn't happen - it maintained it's high standard all the way through all three series.
The casting was superb - Robin (Jonas Armstrong) so good and lovable, Marion (Lucy Griffiths) doing her bit for liberating women so long ago!, The Sheriff (Keith Allen) horrible but so funny and Guy of Gisbourne (Richard Armitage) dark and nasty but with a deeply hidden softer side - and all the other side kicks too many to mention but who help make this as good as it is.
Definitely one of the best boxed sets in my possession and having watched it all the way through, I promptly watched it all over again.
Excellent, worth every penny!

This is a great set looks really nice. Just a warning that the box is all in Dutch and so is the menues on the DVD however the voices are still in English and you can easily turn the subtitles off. Great value for money otherwise.

This is a Dutch version in English with Dutch subtitles. Amazon should make this clear in their title and description. Very annoying adverts at the start of disc 1 which you can't skip

Starting off with a light-hearted feel which sometimes veers to the silly, this retelling of Robin Hood is good and made even better by Richard Armitage as the sexiest Guy of Gisborne - ever. Makes you wonder why Marion didn't run off with him. The stories grow ever more darker in series two and three.

The DVDs make a distracting humming sound when played, but the DVD after one play started to skip and stall. The menus are in Dutch which I knew when buying and can be worked out . There are only a small amount of extras and none of the cast commentaries, hood acadamey extras. DIssappointing box set. I have subsequently bought the individual series with all the extras, the quality is much better and worth it for the cast commentaries alone.

If there is one thing that might bother you about this otherwise fun version of the legend, it is the very 21st century dialog. The characters sometimes talk in the jargon of 'the valley' rather than the medieval forest. For sure.

But the winning cast even makes this anachronism seem trivial. Their acting is great ensemble work and the stories are clever, even compelling. I watched all three series inside of a week and enjoyed every minute.

Jason Armstrong is just about perfect for the part: good looking but not beautiful, full of himself but self-deprecating, a reluctant leader. The various Sheriffs of Nottingham are a panoply of evil, hate, and camp. Quite fun, but the hand- and finger-choppings are real enough. The hangings, in keeping with the legend, rarely come off and we are glad. Toby Stephens is camp, borderline psychotic, and great fun as Prince John. Richard Armitage stands out as Guy of Gisbourne: darkly beautiful and demonic, evil but with a twist. His sister is even worse (bi-polar might describe her today) -- though not as pretty. Guy does undergo quite a transformation, and we are glad again, because we want to like him throughout.

Robin's gang are also quite endearing. They love him and the feeling is mutual.

The ending is lovely, and a bit of a surprise. But, as always, the actors, writers, and producers make it work.

We bought this after watching the first season on Netflix and were happy with it at first. However, if you watch this series, take my advice and do not watch season 3. It is pointless, goes on forever and ultimately will leave you angry. Seasons one and two are fantastic though.
