Product Description
Drama based on the true story of the events that led to the making of 'Citizen Kane', considered by many to be the greatest America film of all time. Liev Schreiber stars as the genius theatre director Orson Welles, who, stuck for a subject for his first film, attends a dinner party at the home of multi-millionaire publisher William Randoph Hearst (James Cromwell). After meeting Hearst, and having an argument with him, Welles decides to make a film about him - but the project, referred to only by its production code-name 'RKO 281', must be kept tightly under wraps to keep the tyrannical Hearst from sabotaging it. The film co-stars Melanie Griffith, John Malkovich, Brenda Blethyn, David Suchet and Roy Sheider.

RKO 281 tells the story of the making of Citizen Kane. I stumbled across this (made for TV) movie on the TV one night and couldn't take my eyes off it; I knew that I had to find the DVD.
If you know the movie Citizen Kane, it's fascinating to see this flipside, of how media mogul William Randolph Hurst (the prototype for Kane) tried to stop the movie being made. Liev Schreiber really summons up the spirit of the young Orson Welles as he struggles to make his masterpiece.
When you're done with that and want to hear more about Hearst, it's well worth taking a peek at "The Cats Meow" too.

I caught the first 20 minutes of this film whilst on holiday and got so hooked I had to buy it when I got back to the UK so I could see how it ended. A brilliant performance of Orson Wells and well worth watching. When we get so many repeats on TV it makes you wonder why films like this just never get to be seen.
