Superb! 15 July 2004
By Nick
Format:Audio CD
I first heard this album on vinyl in the late 70's, and have wanted my own copy ever since. Simply superb - a brilliant song writer at his very best, supported by artists of high calibre (John Martyn on backing guitar, a drummer who went on to play for Dire Straits...... Brilliant.

After the success of 'Streets' and a rather unsuccessful tour with his band (the audience shouting 'On your own. Ralph) Ralph 'retired' to America, only to emerge just over a year later with the excellent 'Right Side Up' album. Many of these songs are classics: 'From Clare to Here', for example, is his second most covered song, particularly in Ireland where many people mistakingly think it is a traditional Irish folk song! 'Weather the storm' and 'Naomi' were both considered strong enough to be issued as singles. Notoriously slow at song-writing himself, Ralph includes a couple of covers: the beatiful 'San Diago Serenade' by Tom Waites and John Martyn's 'May You Never'. John Martyn himself makes a guest appearance, not on his own song, but on Ralph's 'River Rising Moon High'. Other musicians involved include Danny Thompson and Dave Pegg.

The CD release includes one bonus track, a cover of Phil Colclough's 'Song For Ireland', a track previously unreleased outside the emerald isles. Wisely the record sleave has been redesigned for this release (the original was awfull!), and includes informative notes by Ralph about each of the songs.
